Our journey with JAM Duo often takes us to the most beautiful corners of the UK, and Newhall Estate, just south of Edinburgh, is one of Scotland’s most enchanting wedding venues. We were thrilled to travel north to provide live music for Jenny and Colin’s wedding, which took place in late autumn — a day filled with warmth, laughter, and plenty of cinematic magic.
The Setting – Newhall Estate Conservatory
Newhall Estate is a truly romantic venue, surrounded by woodland and gardens that seem to come straight from a storybook. The original plan had been to hold the ceremony outdoors, but with the chilly Scottish weather and a steady drizzle throughout the morning, everything moved into the conservatory — a glass-roofed space filled with natural light, climbing plants, and views of the grounds. It proved to be the perfect choice: intimate, atmospheric, and wonderfully acoustic for cello and piano.
We set up in one corner of the conservatory, using our Nord Stage piano, Yamaha sound system, and electric cello. As always, everything we play is entirely live – no backing tracks – giving each performance a unique feel that responds to the moment.
A Movie-Inspired Wedding Ceremony
From the start, Jenny and Colin made it clear that film music was a big part of their story. The playlist they chose for their ceremony was a dream for any musician, combining beautiful cinematic themes with emotional storytelling.
As guests began to arrive and take their seats, we played a series of pieces that perfectly set the tone for the afternoon:
- Path of the Wind – My Neighbour Totoro
- Jurassic Park Theme – John Williams
- Across the Stars – Star Wars Love Theme
- Come What May – Moulin Rouge
For the final pre-ceremony piece, just before the bridal procession began, we played Test Drive from How to Train Your Dragon — a lively, sweeping score that signalled something special was about to happen.
The Processional – A Journey Through Middle-earth
This entrance will stay with us for a long time. The bridal party consisted of five bridesmaids and one ring bearer, and Jenny wanted the music to build and evolve as they entered.
We began with Romantic Flight from How to Train Your Dragon for the bridesmaids, then seamlessly transitioned into The Riders of Rohan from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers for Jenny’s entrance. The powerful, majestic opening as the riders approach Edoras worked beautifully for that moment when she appeared at the end of the aisle. It was cinematic, emotional, and completely fitting for a couple who clearly love the world of film.

Signing and Exit
While the couple signed the register, we changed the mood with two gentler pieces:
- Married Life – from Up (piano solo)
- Cornfield Chase – from Interstellar
Both pieces brought a calm and reflective quality before the joyful finale.
For the couple’s exit, there could only be one choice — The Shire from The Lord of the Rings. It’s such an uplifting and hopeful melody, perfectly suited to walking back down the aisle as newlyweds. The smiles said it all.
Drinks Reception – A Change of Mood
With the formalities complete, guests stayed in the conservatory for the drinks reception. Jenny and Colin wanted this part of the day to feel more relaxed and contemporary, so we moved away from film scores and played a collection of our pop and soul covers, many of which the bride had enjoyed on our SoundCloud page.
Among the highlights were:
- At Last – Etta James
- Perfect – Ed Sheeran
- Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve
- Dreams and other favourites from Fleetwood Mac
- LOVE – Nat King Cole
- Feeling Good – Nina Simone
- Love Story – Taylor Swift
- Together in Electric Dreams – Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder
The combination of cello and piano works beautifully for this style of music — warm, melodic, and perfectly balanced for background listening while guests enjoy conversation and champagne. With the Scottish rain pattering softly on the conservatory roof, the whole atmosphere felt timeless and romantic.
About Newhall Estate
If you haven’t visited Newhall Estate before, it’s a place steeped in character. The house itself dates back to the 1700s and sits within acres of private parkland. The conservatory, with its high glass panels and views of the surrounding gardens, provides an elegant space for both ceremonies and receptions. Despite the rain, the light was stunning all day, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. It’s easy to see why Newhall has become one of Scotland’s most loved wedding venues.
A Personal Thank You
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Jenny and Colin for choosing JAM Duo to provide music for their special day. It was a real pleasure to perform for such a lovely couple and to bring their movie-inspired vision to life. From the sweeping fantasy themes to soulful love songs, their wedding captured a perfect mix of imagination and emotion — and it was wonderful to be part of it.
Always Live, Always Personal
Every performance we give is live — no loops, no tracks, no pre-recorded parts. Just the natural sound of cello and piano, perfectly timed to each moment of the day. Whether it’s a ceremony rich in film music or a drinks reception full of familiar pop favourites, we love tailoring our set to suit the couple and their atmosphere.
