Few wedding venues are as instantly recognisable as Hever Castle. Surrounded by immaculate gardens, a peaceful lake and centuries of history, it is one of those venues that feels special from the moment you arrive. As Hever Castle wedding musicians, we’re always excited when we see this venue appear in our diary, and in July we had the pleasure of providing live ceremony music for the wedding of Seán and Jasmine.
Although we were only booked to perform during the ceremony itself, it turned into one of those memorable wedding days that stay with you. From an unexpected morning visit to Winston Churchill’s home at nearby Chartwell, to a wonderfully relaxed afternoon overlooking the Italian Gardens, it was another reminder of why we love travelling across the country to perform at such incredible venues.
A Morning Exploring Kent
One of the advantages of an afternoon ceremony is that it allows a little time to explore before work begins.
With the ceremony not due to start until 4.30pm, we headed first to Chartwell, the former home of Sir Winston Churchill, just a short drive from Hever Castle. We’d both wanted to visit for some time and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Walking through the house gives a fascinating insight into Churchill beyond politics. His paintings fill the walls, his study remains much as he left it, and the gardens are every bit as impressive as the house itself.
One fact that particularly caught our attention was Churchill’s love of butterflies. As many people who follow our social media know, we’ve become increasingly interested in photographing butterflies whilst travelling between weddings around the UK. Discovering that Churchill himself took great pleasure in watching butterflies around the gardens felt like a rather lovely coincidence.
It made for a wonderfully peaceful start to the day before changing into concert dress and making our way to Hever Castle.
Arriving at Hever Castle
Hever Castle is one of England’s finest historic castles and is perhaps best known as the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Today it has become one of Kent’s premier luxury wedding venues, offering a choice of beautiful ceremony spaces both indoors and outdoors.
Seán and Jasmine had chosen The Loggia, overlooking the lake within the Italian Garden.
It is a truly spectacular setting.
Tall stone arches frame the views across the water while the formal gardens stretch away in front of the ceremony seating. It feels open and airy whilst still providing shelter beneath the elegant stone structure.
The only challenge on this particular afternoon was the weather.
Although the sun was shining, a strong wind had developed across the lake. Outdoor ceremonies always bring an element of unpredictability and this was certainly one of those occasions where everything needed securing carefully before guests began arriving.
A Huge Help from the Venue Team
One thing we particularly appreciated was the kindness of the venue staff.
Our equipment includes a full-size digital piano, keyboard stand, music stand, electric cello, amplification and all the associated equipment required to perform live. Whilst we’re very experienced at moving everything efficiently, every musician knows that reducing carrying distances makes a significant difference.
The team at Hever Castle very kindly allowed us to drive down close to The Loggia to unload before moving the vehicle back to the main parking area.
It may sound like a small gesture, but it saved a considerable amount of time and effort, particularly with the afternoon wind making equipment more awkward to handle. It’s exactly the sort of thoughtful assistance that helps suppliers deliver the very best experience for couples.
Once everything was positioned, we carried out our sound check, secured our music against the breeze and enjoyed the wonderful views across the lake while waiting for guests to arrive.
Live Music as Guests Arrived
Guests began arriving from 3.30pm, giving everyone plenty of opportunity to take their seats and enjoy the surroundings before the ceremony.
For the pre-ceremony music, Seán and Jasmine had chosen an eclectic collection of songs that perfectly reflected their personalities.
Our set included:
- Wonderwall – Oasis
- Dreams – The Cranberries
- The Office (US) Theme
- You’ve Got The Love – The Source featuring Candi Staton
One of the things we always enjoy is taking songs from completely different musical styles and arranging them for piano and cello. A familiar rock anthem, an indie classic, a television theme and an uplifting dance favourite all become something elegant and atmospheric when performed live by cello and piano.
As always, the music gently filled the space without dominating conversation, helping create a relaxed atmosphere as family and friends gathered.
Jasmine’s Entrance
Every wedding ceremony has one moment everyone remembers.
For Seán and Jasmine, that moment arrived with Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi.
It has become one of the most requested contemporary bridal entrance pieces over recent years, and it’s easy to understand why. The gentle piano melody gradually builds with beautiful emotional intensity, making it an ideal choice for a walk down the aisle.
Performed live, we can carefully match the pace of the bride’s entrance, allowing every step to feel completely natural rather than forcing the walk to fit a recording.
It’s one of the biggest advantages of live wedding music and something couples often comment on afterwards.
Music During the Signing of the Register
Following the ceremony, we performed three further pieces during the signing.
The selections were:
- Songbird – Fleetwood Mac
- This Year’s Love – David Gray
- At Last – Etta James
Each piece brings its own character.
Songbird remains one of the most beautifully understated love songs ever written.
This Year’s Love offers warmth and intimacy with its instantly recognisable melody.
At Last provides a timeless, soulful conclusion before everyone prepares for the newly married couple’s exit.
These quieter moments often pass surprisingly quickly, so choosing music with strong melodic lines helps create a lovely atmosphere while guests enjoy photographs and watch the official paperwork being completed.
A Joyful Exit
Once everything was complete, Seán and Jasmine made their way back down the aisle as husband and wife to Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap.
It’s an uplifting, feel-good piece that works brilliantly as a recessional.
As guests followed the couple out into the sunshine, the music captured the excitement and celebration of the moment perfectly.
Performing at Outdoor Ceremonies
Outdoor ceremonies are among our favourites to perform.
There’s something special about hearing live cello and piano surrounded by gardens, trees and open skies rather than four walls.
Of course, they also require careful planning.
Wind, sunshine, changing temperatures and the occasional shower all have to be considered. Our equipment is selected specifically with these situations in mind and we’re always happy to work alongside venue teams to ensure everything runs smoothly.
At Hever Castle, despite the breezy conditions, everything came together beautifully thanks to good planning and excellent support from the venue staff.
Why Couples Choose Live Ceremony Music
Some couples book us for their entire wedding day, while others simply want live music during the ceremony.
The ceremony is, after all, the reason everyone has gathered.
Music shapes almost every significant moment:

For Seán and Jasmine, it was an elegant late afternoon ceremony in one of England’s most iconic wedding venues, with beautiful views across the lake, thoughtfully chosen music and glorious summer sunshine—despite a rather enthusiastic breeze.
It was also one of those days where we were reminded how fortunate we are to travel throughout the UK performing at extraordinary venues, meeting wonderful couples and occasionally discovering fascinating places nearby such as Chartwell along the way.
