A beautiful Scottish wedding with live cello and piano for the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast.

Charlie and Sean’s wedding at Balbirnie House in Fife was a wonderfully elegant day, full of personal details, carefully chosen music and a lovely mix of classic, romantic and fun moments. JAM Duo provided live cello and piano music for their indoor ceremony, outdoor drinks reception in the gardens and wedding breakfast in the ballroom.

With around 40 guests, pistachio green bridesmaids’ dresses, dusky pink for the mothers of the bride and groom, black bows on the ceremony chairs and green tartan kilts for the groomsmen, the whole day had a stylish and distinctly Scottish feel.

Wedding Ceremony Music in the Long Gallery

The ceremony took place indoors in the Long Gallery at Balbirnie House. We were positioned at the rear of the ceremony room, which allowed the music to support each entrance clearly while still keeping the focus on Charlie, Sean and their guests.

Before the ceremony, Charlie and Sean chose music inspired by Bridgerton, creating an elegant atmosphere as guests arrived and took their seats. Bridgerton-style arrangements work beautifully for cello and piano, as they combine the familiarity of modern songs with a more classical sound.

There was also a brilliant personal touch before the bridal party entrance: ring security entered to the Mission Impossible theme tune. These moments always bring a smile to guests’ faces and help make the ceremony feel completely personal to the couple.

For the bridal party and Charlie’s entrance, the couple chose Perfect by Ed Sheeran. The bridesmaids and bride all entered to the same song, with Charlie’s entrance timed around the lyric “we were just kids when we fell in love.” With live music, this kind of timing can be shaped naturally, allowing us to begin with gentle piano music for the bridesmaids before bringing the main melodic moment into focus for the bride’s entrance.

Signing of the Register

For the signing of the register, Charlie and Sean chose three very personal pieces:

Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift
Hallelujah
Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder

Wildest Dreams reflected Charlie’s love of Bridgerton, while Hallelujah was included because Sean loves Shrek. Signed, Sealed, Delivered then brought a more upbeat, celebratory feel to the end of the signing.

This is one of the reasons live cello and piano works so well for wedding ceremonies. The music can move from romantic and atmospheric to light-hearted and joyful, while still sounding elegant and consistent throughout.

For their exit as a married couple, Charlie and Sean chose Belong Together by Mark Ambor. It gave the ceremony a bright and happy ending as guests applauded and the celebrations began.

Outdoor Drinks Reception in the Gardens

After the ceremony, guests moved outside for the drinks reception in the gardens. Balbirnie House is a beautiful setting for this part of a wedding day, and live music outdoors gives guests a relaxed and elegant backdrop while they enjoy drinks, photographs and conversation.

For the drinks reception, Charlie and Sean asked for a mixture of Shrek songs, indie songs, pop music, and music that would appeal to both older and younger guests. This is exactly the kind of brief we enjoy, as it allows us to shape the set around the mood of the afternoon.

A drinks reception is not just background music. It helps carry the atmosphere after the ceremony and keeps the energy of the day moving. With cello and piano, we can blend lighter classical pieces, film music, pop covers and indie favourites into a set that feels varied but never intrusive.

Wedding Breakfast Music in the Ballroom

After the drinks reception, the wedding party moved downstairs to the ballroom for speeches and the wedding breakfast. We relocated our instruments and set up for the meal, continuing the live music into the next part of the day.

For their entrance into the wedding breakfast as Mr and Mrs, Charlie and Sean chose Matteo by Frankie Valli, starting from around 50 seconds in. This gave their entrance an upbeat, fast-paced and celebratory feel, setting the tone for the meal.

Their wedding breakfast music choices included a fantastic mix of pop, indie and modern favourites, including:

Africa by Toto
Another Love by Tom Odell
Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston
Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth
Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish
Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve
Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen
Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader
Demons by Imagine Dragons
Everglow by Coldplay
Faded by Alan Walker
Girls Like You by Maroon 5
Glue Song
Golden Hour by JVKE
Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles
I Say a Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin
Ironic by Alanis Morissette
Killing Me Softly
Love Again by Dua Lipa
Make You Feel My Love by Adele
Ordinary by Alex Warren
Paradise by Coldplay
Stargazing by Myles Smith
So Easy to Fall in Love by Olivia Dean

They also mentioned artists including Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, ABBA and Coldplay. This gave us plenty of scope to create a varied wedding breakfast set, moving between relaxed, romantic, nostalgic and uplifting music.

Because the speeches took place before the meal, the wedding breakfast itself had a lovely flow. Live music during the meal helps create atmosphere without overpowering conversation, and the ballroom setting at Balbirnie House gave this part of the day a real sense of occasion.

Personal Wedding Music with JAM Duo

Charlie and Sean’s wedding was a perfect example of how personal wedding music can be. Their choices included romantic ceremony music, Bridgerton-inspired songs, Shrek references, Mission Impossible for ring security, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Frankie Valli, indie favourites and modern pop.

At JAM Duo, all of our music is performed live by cello and piano, with no backing tracks. This means we can adapt the timing of entrance music, shape transitions naturally and respond to the atmosphere of the day.

For Charlie and Sean, this was especially important for the bridal entrance to Perfect, where the music needed to build towards a particular moment. Live music gives that flexibility in a way a fixed track simply cannot.

Live Wedding Music at Balbirnie House

Balbirnie House is a wonderful venue for a wedding, with elegant indoor spaces and beautiful gardens for the drinks reception. Charlie and Sean made full use of the venue, beginning with their ceremony in the Long Gallery, moving outside for drinks in the gardens, and then continuing downstairs in the ballroom for their wedding breakfast.

It was a pleasure for JAM Duo to provide live cello and piano music for such a personal and joyful day. From Bridgerton-style ceremony music and Ed Sheeran’s Perfect to Mission Impossible, Shrek, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder and a ballroom entrance to Frankie Valli, Charlie and Sean’s music choices helped create a wedding day full of character.

Congratulations to Charlie and Sean, and thank you for choosing JAM Duo to be part of your wedding at Balbirnie House.
