Elise and James’s Bowburn Hall wedding took place on 29 July 2026, with JAM Duo providing live cello and piano music throughout the celebration. We performed for the couple’s outdoor ceremony and drinks reception before moving inside the Durham venue to accompany their wedding breakfast.
With 76 guests, an elegant summer colour palette and a playlist stretching from Ludovico Einaudi and Sting to Coldplay, U2, Blink-182 and Billie Eilish, Elise and James had designed a wedding that felt both romantic and deeply personal. Their choices also showed exactly how versatile live cello and piano music can be: classical pieces blended naturally with rock, pop, dance music, film themes and nostalgic favourites.
An Outdoor Wedding Ceremony at Bowburn Hall
Bowburn Hall provided a beautiful setting for the day. The ceremony took place outside on the decking area at the rear of the building, allowing guests to enjoy the summer surroundings as they gathered for the marriage ceremony.
Guests began arriving from 11.30am and were seated by midday, giving JAM Duo plenty of time to welcome everyone with live music before the ceremony began at 12.30pm.
Pre-ceremony music plays an important role in a wedding. It is the first part of the soundtrack guests experience, setting the mood while friends and family greet one another and find their seats. For Elise and James, the selections were warm, reflective and full of familiar melodies.
Their pre-ceremony choices included:

This was a lovely collection of songs for a relaxed outdoor setting. “Unchained Melody” and “Wonderful Tonight” brought a timeless romantic quality, while “Iris” and “Sonnet” introduced a more contemporary, alternative character. “Fields of Gold” felt especially fitting for a summer wedding, its gentle melody working beautifully as guests settled into the ceremony.
Played instrumentally on cello and piano, each song retained its familiar emotional character without overpowering conversation. The result was a calm, welcoming atmosphere that gradually built anticipation for the bridal entrance.
The Bridal Entrance: “I Giorni”
Elise and James had three bridesmaids and one flower girl in their bridal party. The wedding colours were soft and summery, with butter-yellow bridesmaid dresses, sage green for the groom and beige outfits for the groomsmen.
For Elise’s entrance, the couple chose “I Giorni” by Ludovico Einaudi.
This modern classical piece is an exceptionally effective choice for a bridal procession. Its repeating piano theme creates a sense of gentle movement, while the cello adds warmth and emotional depth. The music can grow naturally as the bridal party makes its way towards the ceremony, without ever becoming too dramatic or distracting.
“I Giorni” also worked well alongside the couple’s wider musical preferences. Although their reception playlists included plenty of upbeat pop and rock, this particular moment called for something spacious, elegant and reflective. The piece allowed everyone’s attention to remain on Elise while giving her entrance a clear musical identity.
One of the advantages of live ceremony music is the freedom to respond to what is happening in real time. Rather than being tied to the fixed duration of a recording, JAM Duo could shape the arrangement around the pace of the bridal party and bring the music to a natural conclusion once Elise had reached James.
Music for the Signing of the Register
Following the ceremony, the signing of the register created another opportunity for live music. Elise and James selected three songs:

“A Sky Full of Stars” has an uplifting energy that translates surprisingly well into an instrumental arrangement. Without the electronic production of the original recording, the central melody comes to the foreground, creating something joyful but still appropriate for the formal signing.
“Somewhere Only We Know” added a more reflective mood. Its sense of memory, belonging and shared experience makes it particularly meaningful at a wedding, while “What a Wonderful World” provided a timeless expression of optimism.
Together, the three pieces filled the signing with music while giving guests a chance to pause and take in the significance of the ceremony.
A Beautiful Day for the Newlyweds
For their exit as a married couple, Elise and James chose “Beautiful Day” by U2.
After the quieter emotion of “I Giorni” and the signing music, this was a brilliant way to mark the change in atmosphere. The recessional is the moment when the formality of the ceremony gives way to celebration, and “Beautiful Day” offered exactly the right sense of optimism and release.
As Elise and James made their way back down the aisle, the recognisable melody created an energetic conclusion to the ceremony and led naturally into the drinks reception.

There were also romantic favourites such as Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One,” Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love),” David Gray’s “This Year’s Love,” “Beneath Your Beautiful,” Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” and Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me.”
The playlist continued with “Ironic,” “I’ll Be There for You,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Friday I’m in Love,” “Golden,” “Chandelier” and “Songbird.”
This kind of variety is ideal for a drinks reception. Guests are moving around, chatting, enjoying refreshments and congratulating the couple, so the music needs to be engaging without demanding constant attention. Familiar songs help create a relaxed social atmosphere, with different selections appealing to different generations.
The instrumental format also brought cohesion to a playlist spanning several decades and genres. A Kygo track, a Disney ballad and a song by The Cure might sound dramatically different in their original versions, but arranged for cello and piano they become part of one elegant musical soundscape.
Songs such as “Africa” and “All the Small Things” also brought an element of fun. Guests often recognise an unexpected melody and take a moment to realise what they are hearing. Those discoveries can become memorable details in their own right.
Moving Inside for the Wedding Breakfast
At 3pm, the celebration moved inside Bowburn Hall for the wedding breakfast. JAM Duo relocated with the guests and continued performing as everyone sat down to enjoy the meal.
The transition from the outdoor drinks reception to the indoor wedding breakfast gave the music a slightly different role. During the drinks reception, it supported a lively, mobile crowd. Over dinner, it created a polished background atmosphere while guests talked at their tables.

“Everywhere,” “Landslide,” “Human Nature” and “True Colours” introduced warmth and nostalgia. More modern choices such as “Clarity,” “Ocean Eyes” and “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” kept the soundtrack connected to contemporary pop.
Some songs also returned in different parts of the day. “All the Small Things” and “Tale as Old as Time” appeared during both the drinks reception and wedding breakfast, becoming recurring musical threads within the celebration.
A Personal Soundtrack from Ceremony to Dinner
What made Elise and James’s wedding music particularly successful was the balance between personal taste and the changing atmosphere of the day.
