If people have been invited primarily to meet one another, then they need to be able to speak. For larger spaces we can use professional amplification to distribute the sound evenly rather than simply making one part of the room excessively loud. In more intimate venues, we can often perform at much lower volume.

Our own setup can range from a relatively compact arrangement using our Nord stage piano and electric cello through to our gloss black grand piano shell, which creates the appearance and presence of a grand piano where an acoustic instrument is not available.

For formal dinners, military occasions and traditional events, we can also incorporate music appropriate to the organisation or occasion alongside our usual repertoire.

Christmas events are one area where music can very quickly go wrong.
There is certainly a place for Christmas music. There is considerably less justification for playing nothing but Christmas music for three consecutive hours.
For corporate Christmas parties we prefer to mix seasonal favourites into our normal repertoire of contemporary songs, film themes and popular classics. This creates a festive atmosphere without making guests feel as though they have been trapped inside a department store since October.
A cello and piano arrangement of a familiar Christmas song can sound particularly effective, especially during an arrival reception or dinner. But once the atmosphere has been established, there is no reason why the rest of the programme cannot include everything from Coldplay and Adele to Taylor Swift, The Beatles and film music.
This balance makes live music suitable for organisations that want their Christmas celebration to feel festive without necessarily becoming a themed party.
It also works particularly well for afternoon and early-evening events where a full party band or DJ would simply be inappropriate.

Not every corporate event involves dinner.
Businesses also use live music for product launches, client receptions, exhibitions, networking events, anniversary celebrations and hospitality occasions. We can usually position ourselves so that the music reaches the main event area without obstructing the movement of guests. If a presentation begins, we can stop immediately. If timings move — something which has been known to happen at corporate events despite the existence of spreadsheets — we can adapt accordingly.
For us, this is part of being professional event musicians rather than simply performers.
Our purpose is to fit into the event that has been planned, not expect the event to reorganise itself around us.

Recorded music unquestionably has its place. There are situations where a carefully created playlist is entirely sufficient.
But live music changes the way an event feels.
Guests see musicians performing as they enter the room. Music reacts to what is happening rather than simply continuing regardless. The repertoire can change according to the atmosphere, a piece can be extended if necessary and the performance can stop instantly when somebody unexpectedly decides it is time to make a speech.
