WEDDING MUSIC GUIDE · WEDDING BREAKFAST
Music that sits underneath the meal
Wedding breakfast music is not essential, but when it is done well it makes the room feel warmer, more relaxed and more complete.
The key is restraint. Music during the meal should support conversation, not compete with it.
Wedding breakfast at a glance
WHEN
From guests taking their seats until shortly before speeches.
VOLUME
Present enough to add atmosphere, quiet enough that nobody has to raise their voice.
STYLE
Relaxed modern music, classical favourites and lighter cocktail-style repertoire.
Why have music during the meal?
Once everyone is seated, there are natural pauses between courses, conversations and service. Music softens those gaps and gives the room a little more polish without making the meal feel staged.
It also helps carry the energy from the drinks reception into the meal, particularly if the same musicians are moving with the wedding rather than disappearing after the ceremony.
FROM EXPERIENCE
The best wedding breakfast music is often the music guests notice without consciously listening to it. If people can chat comfortably and still feel that the room has atmosphere, the balance is right.
What works well?
Modern & romantic
Gentle pop and love songs work especially well when guests already recognise the melodies.
Classical & cinematic
Classical pieces and film music add elegance without demanding too much attention.
Cocktail-style
Piano-led arrangements and lighter repertoire can give the meal a relaxed hotel-lounge feel.
When should the music stop?
Usually before speeches begin. Speeches need everyone’s attention and should not have background music underneath them unless something specific has been planned.
If there is a gap after the meal and before the evening begins, music can return for a cocktail hour, cake cutting or the lead-up to the first dance.
It should never feel like a performance you have to watch
During the wedding breakfast, live music works best when it belongs in the room rather than sitting on top of it. Cello and piano can provide warmth and character while guests remain free to talk, eat and enjoy themselves.
