Ceremony & Drinks Reception Music by JAM Duo

Winter weddings have a very particular magic about them. The light is softer, the colours deeper, and there’s often a sense of intimacy that feels wonderfully intentional. Eleanor and Rob’s wedding at Farbridge, just outside Chichester, was a perfect example of that – elegant, calm, deeply personal, and beautifully styled from start to finish.

We were absolutely delighted to provide live cello and piano music for both the ceremony and the drinks reception, all taking place indoors at this stunning West Sussex venue. From the very first planning conversations, it was clear that Eleanor and Rob had thought carefully about how they wanted their day to feel, and music played a central role in shaping that atmosphere.

A refined winter palette and a striking first impression

Before we even get to the music, it’s worth pausing on the visual impact of this wedding, because it really was something special. Eleanor and Rob chose a rich, winter-appropriate colour scheme that immediately set the tone for the day.

The groom and best man wore dark green velvet tuxedos, while the groomsmen and fathers were dressed in black velvet tuxedos – a bold and luxurious choice that worked beautifully against the neutral tones of Farbridge’s interiors. The bridesmaids echoed the look perfectly in full-length dark green velvet dresses, creating a wonderfully cohesive aesthetic.

What made this even more effective was the element of surprise: guests hadn’t been told about the tuxedos in advance, so many arrived in classic suits and ties. When the bridal party appeared, the contrast elevated the whole look, making those key moments feel all the more dramatic and memorable.

Setting up for the ceremony

For the ceremony, we were positioned at the front of the ceremony space, exactly as Eleanor and Rob had requested during the planning stage. This placement worked beautifully – close enough for the sound to feel immediate and expressive, but visually unobtrusive so the focus remained firmly on the couple.

As always, we performed live on piano and electric cello, carefully balancing our sound to suit the room and the number of guests. Farbridge’s ceremony space lends itself well to live music, with a warmth that supports both classical repertoire and more contemporary arrangements.

Pre-ceremony music: calm, reflective, and cinematic

As guests arrived and took their seats, we created a gentle musical backdrop designed to settle the room and invite everyone into a calm, reflective headspace.

The pre-ceremony selections moved gracefully between classical and cinematic styles, including:

  • What a Wonderful World
  • Jupiter from The Planets
  • Ave Maria
  • The Swan
  • Cinema Paradiso

This blend worked beautifully for a winter wedding. There was a sense of grandeur, certainly, but also warmth and nostalgia – music that encourages people to slow down, take in their surroundings, and feel the significance of the moment.

Eleanor’s entrance: Edelweiss at 60bpm

One of the most carefully considered moments of the ceremony was Eleanor’s entrance. She chose Edelweiss as her walking-down-the-aisle music, with the tempo agreed in advance at approximately 60 beats per minute.

This kind of planning makes a real difference. A slower, steady tempo allows the bride to walk naturally, without feeling rushed, and gives the music space to breathe. The melody of Edelweiss suits this perfectly – tender, sincere, and quietly emotional without ever tipping into sentimentality.

As Eleanor appeared, the room seemed to soften. It was one of those moments where everything aligns: the music, the pace, the expressions on guests’ faces. From our perspective at the front, it was incredibly moving to witness.

Signing the register: thoughtful and lyrical choices

For the signing of the register, Eleanor and Rob selected two songs that felt intimate and deeply personal:

  • Blackbird
  • Real Love

These worked wonderfully as a pair. Blackbird has a delicacy and introspection that translates beautifully to cello and piano, while Real Love brings a slightly warmer, more open feel, still understated but emotionally rich.

Signing music often needs to fill time without demanding attention, and these choices did exactly that – creating atmosphere, supporting the moment, and allowing guests to remain present without distraction.

A joyful exit: Christmas meets Love Actually

For their couple exit, Eleanor and Rob opted for something with a bit more lift and character, choosing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) / Love Is All Around.

This was a joyful, slightly playful way to close the ceremony, particularly fitting for a winter wedding. As they walked back down the aisle together, there was an audible shift in the room – smiles, laughter, and that unmistakable sense of celebration beginning in earnest.

Transitioning into the drinks reception

After the ceremony, we relocated to the bar area for the drinks reception. This is something we do regularly, and we always aim to make the transition as smooth and unobtrusive as possible, ensuring there’s no break in atmosphere for guests.

Once set up, we began playing as drinks were served and conversations started to flow. The brief here was clear: relaxed, romantic, recognisable, and varied enough to appeal across generations.

Drinks reception music: warmth, nostalgia, and gentle uplift

Eleanor and Rob’s drinks reception playlist was wonderfully expansive, blending film music, singer-songwriter classics, contemporary love songs, and festive touches.

Across the reception, we performed a wide range of music, including:

  • Film and cinematic pieces such as La CaliffaCinema ParadisoMaestro from The Holiday, and the Portuguese Theme from Love Actually (piano solo)
  • Timeless love songs including Your SongAt LastCan You Feel the Love Tonight, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow
  • Contemporary favourites like A Thousand YearsMake You Feel My LoveThe LuckiestHow Long Will I Love You, and What Was I Made For?
  • Festive nods such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (piano solo) and Merry Christmas
  • Lighter, upbeat moments with songs like Together in Electric Dreams and All the Small Things

This kind of variety works particularly well during drinks receptions. Guests can drift in and out of listening, recognise a favourite melody, and enjoy the music as part of the overall ambience rather than a focal performance.

Why live cello and piano works so well at Farbridge

Farbridge is a venue that really suits live daytime music. Its spaces are elegant without feeling formal, and acoustically supportive without being overpowering. Cello and piano sit beautifully within that environment, offering enough presence to be felt while still allowing conversation to flow naturally.

For winter weddings especially, this combination brings warmth and depth. The cello adds richness and emotion, while the piano provides clarity and structure – together creating a sound that feels refined, romantic, and timeless.

A heartfelt thank you

Eleanor and Rob, thank you so much for choosing JAM Duo to be part of your wedding day. It was a real pleasure to work with you during the planning stage and to bring your carefully chosen music to life on the day itself.

Your winter wedding at Farbridge was elegant, thoughtful, and full of warmth – a joy to be part of from beginning to end. We wish you both every happiness as you begin this next chapter together.
