Ceremony & Drinks Reception Music | 16th March 2026

Set in the rolling Derbyshire countryside, Shottle Hall is one of those venues that feels quietly refined—elegant without being overwhelming, and perfectly suited to smaller, more intimate weddings.

On 16th March 2026, we had the pleasure of providing live piano and cello music for Sophie and Sam’s wedding day. With just 28 guests, this was a beautifully close-knit celebration where every moment felt personal, and music naturally became part of the atmosphere rather than something separate from it.

We provided our ceremony and drinks reception package, with both taking place indoors in the same space —allowing the day to flow seamlessly from one moment to the next.

A Light-Filled Derbyshire Wedding Venue

Shottle Hall offers a very particular kind of setting. It’s a country house venue, but on a more intimate scale—ideal for weddings where connection and atmosphere matter more than size.

The ceremony space is bright and calm, with soft natural light that works beautifully with live acoustic music. For Sophie and Sam, we were positioned towards the rear of the ceremony room, allowing the music to carry gently forward without ever feeling intrusive.

Following the ceremony, we moved just a short distance into the dining room for the drinks reception. With everything on one level and no restrictions, the transition was effortless—no breaks, no resets, just a natural continuation of the day.

Pre-Ceremony: Soft, Contemporary Atmosphere

As guests arrived ahead of the 1:30pm ceremony, we performed a set of modern, emotive songs that immediately set the tone:

  • Forever – Lewis Capaldi
  • Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran
  • Dandelions – Ruth B
  • Demons – Imagine Dragons
  • Golden Hour – JVKE

This style of music works particularly well for smaller weddings. It’s familiar and emotional, but when arranged for piano and cello, it becomes softer and more reflective—perfect for those early moments as guests settle into the space.

You could feel the room gradually quieten as people arrived, conversations softening as the music gently shaped the atmosphere.

A Beautifully Measured Entrance

For her entrance, Sophie chose:

  • You Are the Reason – Calum Scott

She had asked for the piece to be played slightly slower than usual, which is exactly the kind of detail that live music allows us to shape.

By easing the tempo just slightly, the music created more space—allowing each step down the aisle to feel unhurried and natural. In a smaller ceremony, these details become even more noticeable. The pacing, the tone, the way the music supports the moment rather than leading it.

It was a simple choice, but incredibly effective.

Signing the Register: Warm and Personal

During the signing, we performed:

  • Something in the Heavens – Lewis Capaldi
  • Until I Found You – Stephen Sanchez
  • Long Story Short – Lauren Spencer Smith

These songs created a warm, contemporary feel—romantic without being overly formal. The balance here is always important: music should enhance the moment without drawing attention away from it.

With just 28 guests, there’s a heightened sense of presence. Everyone is engaged, everyone is watching, and the music becomes part of that shared focus.

A Joyful, Upbeat Exit

To conclude the ceremony:

  • Marry You – Bruno Mars

This brought an immediate lift in energy as Sophie and Sam walked back down the aisle together. It’s a song that always works—light, upbeat, and instantly recognisable.

That shift from ceremony to celebration felt effortless, setting the tone perfectly for the drinks reception that followed.

Drinks Reception: Seamless and Relaxed

With the drinks reception held in the same room, the transition from ceremony was completely seamless.

There’s something particularly effective about keeping everything indoors in close proximity. The energy of the ceremony carries straight through, and the music can evolve naturally without interruption.

A Contemporary, Acoustic Style

Sophie and Sam asked for a relaxed mix of songs inspired by artists such as:

  • Lewis Capaldi
  • The Script
  • Muse
  • Anne-Marie
  • Tate McRae
  • Gracie Abrams
  • Ed Sheeran

This gave us a clear direction—modern, melodic, and emotionally driven.

Arranged for piano and cello, these songs take on a softer, more atmospheric quality. The vocals disappear, but the essence remains. It allows the music to sit comfortably alongside conversation, enhancing the mood without dominating it.

Why This Wedding Felt So Effective

Sophie and Sam’s wedding worked beautifully because everything was aligned:

  • A smaller guest list creating intimacy
  • A venue perfectly suited to that scale
  • A consistent musical style throughout the day
  • Thoughtful, personal song choices

Nothing felt overcomplicated. Instead, the focus was on creating a calm, elegant atmosphere where each moment could unfold naturally.

And in that setting, live music becomes incredibly powerful—not because it stands out, but because it fits so perfectly.

Live Music at Shottle Hall

Shottle Hall is an excellent venue for live ceremony and drinks reception music:

  • Bright, acoustically balanced ceremony space
  • Close proximity between rooms, allowing seamless transitions
  • No sound restrictions, giving flexibility in performance
  • Ideal scale for intimate weddings, where music plays a more noticeable role

For couples planning a wedding here, piano and cello provides a refined, adaptable option that works beautifully across both ceremony and reception.

A Final Thought

There’s a quiet elegance to weddings like Sophie and Sam’s.

No need for excess. No need for spectacle. Just a clear sense of what matters—and the confidence to let that lead the day.

From the slowed, thoughtful entrance to the relaxed drinks reception that followed, everything felt connected, calm, and genuinely personal.
