There are some weddings where everything simply falls into place. The weather arrives exactly as hoped, guests relax into the atmosphere from the very beginning, and the music seems to drift naturally through the day rather than feel like a separate part of it.

Rich and Scarlett’s wedding at Sudbury House Hotel was exactly that kind of wedding.

Set against warm spring sunshine with ceremony and drinks both taking place outdoors, this was one of those rare English wedding days that felt effortlessly relaxed from start to finish. We performed live throughout the afternoon using our Nord piano and Yamaha electric cello setup — keeping everything modern, elegant and flexible for the outdoor setting — and it suited the atmosphere perfectly.

From emotional aisle music to film themes, pop classics and even butterflies drifting through the gardens during the drinks reception, this was a wedding full of personality and joy.

Live Outdoor Wedding Music at Sudbury House

Outdoor wedding ceremonies always bring a slightly different atmosphere compared to indoor weddings. Everything feels more open, guests naturally spread out more, and the sound of live instruments carries beautifully when the weather cooperates.

For Rich and Scarlett’s day, the original plan had always been to hold both the ceremony and drinks reception outside if possible, and thankfully the British weather behaved itself brilliantly.

As guests arrived, the gardens at Sudbury House were already beginning to feel lively and relaxed. The pastel wedding colours worked beautifully against the spring greenery, with soft pinks, purples, blues, greens and yellows giving the whole day a light and joyful feel.

With around 129 guests attending, there was a lovely sense of occasion from the very beginning, but it never lost that relaxed garden-party atmosphere that outdoor weddings can create so well.

For this wedding we performed with:

  • Nord stage piano
  • Yamaha electric cello
  • Fully live sound throughout

We chose not to use our gloss black piano shell for this particular setup. While the piano shell works beautifully in many venues, especially larger indoor spaces and formal ceremony rooms, outdoor weddings often benefit from a slightly cleaner and more contemporary visual setup. The Nord piano and Yamaha electric cello worked perfectly in the gardens and allowed us to move easily between ceremony and drinks reception while maintaining a polished professional look.

And, of course, everything was completely live.

Always Live. Never Backing Tracks.

One of the things couples often mention when booking JAM Duo is that they want their music to feel natural and responsive rather than overly produced or “fixed”.

That matters especially during outdoor ceremonies.

Unlike recorded tracks, live musicians can subtly adapt to what is happening in real time — whether that means extending an introduction slightly, adjusting pacing for the bridal entrance, or shaping an ending naturally as the couple reaches the ceremony area.

Rich and Scarlett chose a brilliant mix of music throughout the day, and it gave us lots of opportunities to shape the atmosphere across different parts of the wedding.

Guests arrived to:

  • All the Small Things
  • Angels
  • Demons
  • Perfect Day
  • Dancing in the Moonlight

This combination immediately created a relaxed and upbeat atmosphere before the ceremony even began. It felt modern, personal and completely suited the outdoor setting.

Scarlett’s Bridal Entrance

One of the standout moments of the day was Scarlett’s entrance to Ordinary by Alex Warren.

Outdoor bridal entrances always feel particularly cinematic because guests can often see movement beginning from a distance before the bride fully appears. Combined with live music, it creates a wonderful sense of anticipation.

The bridal procession itself was beautifully structured:

  • mums
  • groomsmaids
  • page boys and flower girls
  • bridesmaids
  • finally Scarlett herself

With such a large bridal party — including ten flower girls and page boys — timing becomes incredibly important musically. One of the advantages of live musicians is that we can naturally adapt in real time to ensure the music flows properly regardless of walking pace or slight delays.

That flexibility simply is not possible with a fixed backing track or standard recorded version of a song.

By the time Scarlett made her entrance, the atmosphere had become wonderfully emotional without ever feeling overly formal or heavy. The sunshine, outdoor setting and live cello and piano combination created exactly the kind of atmosphere many couples hope for when planning a spring wedding ceremony.

Signing Music with Personality

The signing of the register gave the mood another gentle shift, moving from emotional ceremony music into something more relaxed and personal.

Rich and Scarlett chose:

  • Half the World Away
  • Iris
  • Accidentally in Love

We always enjoy seeing couples mix emotional songs with slightly more playful choices because it helps the ceremony feel personal rather than traditional simply for tradition’s sake.

Accidentally in Love in particular brought a lovely lightness into the ceremony and worked brilliantly outdoors.

A Brilliant Couple Exit

And then came one of the most memorable choices of the day…

The couple exited to the Jurassic Park Theme.

We love moments like this at weddings because they instantly tell guests something about the couple’s personality. It was unexpected, fun and genuinely uplifting — and it worked brilliantly with live piano and cello.

Film music often translates beautifully for weddings because it already carries strong emotional associations. Performed live outdoors, it felt cinematic, joyful and slightly larger-than-life in the best possible way.

The guests absolutely loved it.

Drinks Reception in the Sunshine

Following the ceremony, guests moved into the drinks reception while we continued performing outside in the gardens.

This part of the day felt particularly relaxed. With sunshine, open space and live music drifting naturally through the grounds, guests settled quickly into conversation while still engaging with the music around them.

One of the nicest details of the afternoon was the sheer number of butterflies around the gardens. It sounds like a small thing, but it genuinely added something to the atmosphere. Throughout the drinks reception there always seemed to be butterflies moving across the lawn and flowerbeds while guests enjoyed drinks and canapés in the sun.

Sometimes the smallest details become the moments people remember most clearly afterwards.

A Wedding Playlist Full of Energy

Rich and Scarlett’s drinks reception playlist was fantastic because it mixed upbeat classics, modern pop, film music and nostalgic favourites in a way that kept the atmosphere lively throughout.

Some of the highlights included:

  • Believe
  • Marry You
  • Unwritten
  • Africa
  • Eye of the Tiger
  • Halo
  • A Thousand Years
  • Sweet Child O’ Mine
  • I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
  • Can You Feel the Love Tonight
  • Theme from New York, New York

This kind of varied setlist works brilliantly for live instrumental performance because it keeps guests constantly recognising songs while still allowing the music to remain elegant and suitable for conversation.

That balance is incredibly important during drinks receptions.

Couples often tell us they do not want music to disappear completely into the background, but equally they do not want guests struggling to talk. Piano and cello works particularly well because it creates warmth and atmosphere without dominating the space.

Why Outdoor Weddings Work So Well with Live Music

Outdoor weddings are becoming increasingly popular across the UK, particularly for spring and summer ceremonies, and live musicians can make a huge difference to how those events feel.

Recorded music outdoors can sometimes feel surprisingly flat or disconnected from the environment, particularly in open spaces. Live instruments naturally interact with the surroundings in a much softer and more organic way.

The sound carries differently.
The atmosphere feels less staged.
Guests engage with it more naturally.

For Rich and Scarlett’s wedding, the live cello and piano setup blended beautifully into the gardens rather than feeling imposed upon them.

It became part of the atmosphere itself.

Flexible Wedding Music Throughout the Day

One thing we always aim to provide at JAM Duo is flexibility.

Every wedding works slightly differently depending on timings, weather, venue logistics and guest flow, especially outdoors where plans can sometimes change at short notice.

Because we perform fully live and use professional portable equipment setups, we can adapt quickly and move smoothly between different parts of the day without disrupting the atmosphere.

For this wedding, the transition from ceremony to drinks reception felt completely natural, allowing the music to continue shaping the atmosphere throughout the afternoon rather than stopping abruptly after the ceremony ended.

That continuity helps create a much more immersive guest experience.

Modern Wedding Music for Contemporary Weddings

One of the things we particularly loved about Rich and Scarlett’s wedding was how modern and personal the music choices felt.

There was no pressure to follow a traditional formula.

Instead, the soundtrack reflected their personalities:

  • emotional where it needed to be
  • playful in places
  • nostalgic at times
  • energetic during drinks
  • cinematic during the exit

That freedom is one of the reasons live musicians can be such a valuable part of modern weddings.

Almost any song can work beautifully when thoughtfully arranged for piano and cello.

A Perfect Spring Wedding Day

By the end of the drinks reception, the atmosphere across the gardens felt wonderfully relaxed and celebratory.

Guests were enjoying the sunshine.
Children were running around the grounds.
Butterflies drifted through the flowerbeds.
Live music carried across the gardens.

It was exactly the kind of spring wedding atmosphere many couples hope for when planning an outdoor celebration in the UK.

We absolutely loved being part of Rich and Scarlett’s day and are so grateful they chose JAM Duo to provide live music for their ceremony and drinks reception at Sudbury House.
