There are certain wedding venues in the UK that immediately feel unforgettable the moment you arrive.
Polhawn Fort is absolutely one of them.
Set dramatically above the Cornish coastline with panoramic sea views in every direction, Polhawn Fort has an atmosphere unlike almost any other wedding venue we perform at. The combination of rugged coastal scenery, historic architecture and completely uninterrupted ocean views creates a wedding setting that feels both intimate and cinematic at the same time.
For Eleanor and Andrew’s wedding, the weather was kind enough to allow the entire ceremony and drinks reception to take place outdoors overlooking the sea — and it was genuinely an absolute joy to be part of.
Now admittedly, from a supplier perspective, Polhawn Fort is not exactly the simplest venue for access. Like many dramatic coastal venues, reaching the performance areas involves steep routes, careful unloading and a fair amount of physical effort transporting instruments and equipment down to the venue spaces.
But as always, we managed everything successfully and once the music began against that incredible coastal backdrop, every trip up and down the access paths became completely worthwhile.
A Stunning Coastal Wedding in Cornwall
Eleanor and Andrew created a wedding day that felt relaxed, elegant and full of personality from beginning to end.
With around 67 guests attending, the atmosphere struck that perfect balance between celebration and intimacy, helped enormously by the natural beauty of the setting itself.
Their styling remained soft and understated, with dusky pink bridesmaid dresses alongside dark blue tailoring for the groom, allowing the spectacular Cornish surroundings to become a central part of the visual atmosphere of the day.
One of the things we particularly loved about this wedding was how thoughtfully the music choices reflected the couple’s personalities. There was a wonderful mix of timeless classics, film music, contemporary songs and emotionally uplifting pieces that suited both the venue and atmosphere perfectly.
Outdoor weddings especially benefit from carefully chosen live music because the music naturally becomes part of the wider environment. At coastal venues like Polhawn Fort, piano and cello carries beautifully across open spaces without ever feeling overpowering.
Live Outdoor Ceremony Music Overlooking the Sea
The ceremony took place outdoors with the sea stretching out behind the ceremony area — one of the most spectacular backdrops imaginable for a wedding ceremony.
Guests arrived from 12:15pm while we provided live pre-ceremony music including:
- “How Deep Is Your Love”
- “Always Remember Us This Way”
- “Married Life” from Up
- “What a Wonderful World”
- “Stand By Me”
This mixture of contemporary classics, film music and timeless love songs created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere as guests settled into the outdoor ceremony space.
One of the realities of outdoor ceremonies is that timing and atmosphere matter enormously. Unlike enclosed indoor spaces, outdoor environments feel naturally more open and fluid, so live musicians play an important role in shaping focus and emotional pacing before the ceremony begins.
The processional itself was absolutely lovely.
Eleanor and Andrew’s two dogs were part of the bridal entrance alongside the bridesmaids, all walking in to “At Last” by Etta James — a moment that immediately brought smiles across the ceremony space and perfectly captured the relaxed and joyful atmosphere of the day.
Eleanor then made her entrance to the timeless “Canon in D” by Pachelbel.
There are some pieces that remain wedding classics for very good reason. Performed live on piano and cello overlooking the Cornish coastline, the piece felt elegant, emotional and perfectly suited to the setting.
Personal and Atmospheric Ceremony Music
For the signing music, Eleanor and Andrew selected:
- “Better Together”
- “So Easy to Fall in Love”
- “Let’s Stay Together”
which continued the warm and relaxed atmosphere throughout the ceremony itself.
The newly married couple then exited to “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” by Natalie Cole — a brilliant choice to instantly lift the energy and transition naturally into celebrations and drinks outside.
One of the advantages of remaining outdoors for both the ceremony and drinks reception is that the atmosphere flows continuously rather than guests needing to relocate immediately indoors.
At Polhawn Fort especially, guests were able to relax, enjoy the sea views and fully immerse themselves in the setting while the live music continued throughout the afternoon.
Another Challenging Venue Setup Behind the Scenes
Of course, beautiful coastal venues often come with logistical complications behind the scenes.
Polhawn Fort certainly falls into that category.
Transporting professional live music equipment down to the ceremony and drinks reception areas involves steep access routes and careful handling throughout setup and pack down. While the venue does provide accessible pathways, moving a full performance setup — including instruments, sound equipment and piano shell components — still requires considerable planning and physical effort.
This is one of the things couples often never fully see on a wedding day.
Professional wedding suppliers spend huge amounts of time quietly solving practical challenges behind the scenes so that everything appears calm, seamless and effortless once guests arrive.
At Polhawn Fort, this meant carefully navigating equipment down to the outdoor performance area while ensuring everything remained perfectly timed and fully prepared before guests arrived.
As always though, once the music began and the ceremony started overlooking the sea, all of that effort faded completely into the background.

Drinks Reception Music by the Cornish Coast
Following the ceremony, guests remained outdoors for the drinks reception while we continued performing live music overlooking the coastline.
This was one of those weddings where the atmosphere almost felt cinematic at times. Sunshine, sea air, guests relaxed with drinks across the grounds and live piano and cello carrying through the outdoor space — it was exactly the kind of setting where live music feels particularly special.
Eleanor and Andrew had chosen a wonderfully varied drinks reception playlist including:
- Nina Simone
- Nat King Cole
- Fleetwood Mac
- Toto
- Harry Styles
- Elton John
- Robbie Williams
- Bruno Mars
- Queen
- Stevie Wonder
alongside film and television music from:
- The Lord of the Rings
- Game of Thrones
- Wonka
- The Little Mermaid
This kind of varied playlist works brilliantly for drinks receptions because it allows guests of all ages to recognise different pieces throughout the afternoon.
Film music in particular often works beautifully in instrumental form during weddings. Pieces such as “The Shire” and “May It Be” from The Lord of the Rings translate wonderfully to piano and cello and suited the coastal atmosphere of Polhawn Fort perfectly.
Meanwhile tracks such as “Africa”, “Dreams”, “Marry You” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” helped maintain warmth and energy throughout the reception.
Why Live Music Works So Well at Coastal Weddings
Coastal weddings have a very different atmosphere compared with many traditional indoor venues.
The setting itself already provides such a strong emotional and visual backdrop that the role of live music becomes less about filling silence and more about enhancing atmosphere naturally.
Piano and cello works especially well in these environments because the sound remains elegant, emotional and unobtrusive even in open outdoor spaces.
At Polhawn Fort, the music became part of the wider atmosphere:
- the sea
- the gardens
- the movement of guests
- the relaxed drinks reception
- the ceremony itself
Everything blended together beautifully across the afternoon.
A Wedding We Truly Loved Being Part Of
Despite the challenging access and steep routes into the venue, this wedding was an absolute pleasure to be part of from start to finish.
Eleanor and Andrew were fantastic to work with throughout the planning process and on the wedding day itself, and their guests created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere across the celebrations.
Weddings at venues like Polhawn Fort are always memorable because they combine incredible scenery with genuinely emotional atmosphere. There is something very special about hearing live music overlooking the sea while guests celebrate outdoors together.
As professional wedding musicians, these are exactly the kinds of weddings we love being part of.
Beautiful locations.
Thoughtful music choices.
Relaxed couples.
A wonderful atmosphere.
And despite the logistical workout involved getting everything down to the venue and back again afterwards, we would happily do it all over again for a day like this.
We wish Eleanor and Andrew every happiness for the future and were delighted to provide the soundtrack to such a stunning Cornish wedding day.
