There is something wonderfully relaxed about arriving at a wedding reception venue after the formalities of a church ceremony have already taken place. The excitement of the wedding service has happened, the couple are officially married, and everyone arrives ready to celebrate.
That was certainly the atmosphere when we joined Jennifer and Matthew for their wedding reception at the beautiful Bashall Barn on 23rd May 2026.
Although the ceremony itself took place at a local church nearby, our role began as guests started arriving at Bashall Barn for an afternoon and evening of celebrations. We provided live music throughout the drinks reception and wedding breakfast, creating a soundtrack that accompanied the day from the couple’s arrival right through to the end of the meal.
As always, it was a pleasure to be part of such a warm and welcoming wedding.
A Beautiful Lancashire Wedding Venue
Nestled amongst the rolling countryside of Lancashire’s Ribble Valley, Bashall Barn is one of those venues that immediately impresses with its setting.
Surrounded by open farmland and spectacular views across the countryside, the venue combines rustic character with modern facilities. Large windows allow plenty of natural light into the main reception space, while the outdoor areas make the most of the stunning scenery that surrounds the barn.
One of the things we particularly like about Bashall Barn is its flexibility. Whether couples are planning a summer celebration making use of the outdoor spaces or an indoor reception within the beautifully converted barn itself, the venue adapts effortlessly to suit the day.
Jennifer and Matthew’s wedding was a wonderful example of this. Guests arrived from the church ceremony ready to continue the celebrations in one of Lancashire’s most popular wedding venues.
Arriving at Bashall Barn
One of the practical advantages of performing at Bashall Barn is the straightforward access for suppliers. Everything is conveniently located on one level, making load-in particularly easy.
For musicians carrying professional instruments and sound equipment, easy access is always appreciated. It allows us to get set up efficiently and focus entirely on creating the right atmosphere for the celebration.
For this wedding we used our usual setup of Jules on Nord stage piano and Anne-Marie on Yamaha electric cello, supported by our Yamaha sound system.
We did not use our grand piano shell for this particular wedding. Instead, the sleek and understated appearance of the Nord worked perfectly within the venue, allowing the focus to remain on the music itself.
After setting up and completing our sound check, we were ready to welcome guests as they began arriving from the church.
Live Music for the Drinks Reception
The period immediately after a church ceremony is often one of the most enjoyable parts of a wedding day.
Guests are relaxed, conversations are flowing and everyone is eager to congratulate the newly married couple.
Live music during this period helps create a celebratory atmosphere whilst avoiding the feeling of background silence that can sometimes occur when guests are spread across a large venue.
As guests arrived at Bashall Barn, we provided a varied selection of music chosen by Jennifer and Matthew. Their requests reflected a lovely mix of contemporary favourites, film music, classic love songs and a few unexpected surprises.
One of the things we always enjoy is seeing how different couples personalise the soundtrack to their wedding day.
Jennifer and Matthew’s music choices certainly reflected their personalities.

Film and television music continues to be enormously popular for weddings, and pieces such as Jurassic Park Theme and A Thousand Years always attract attention from guests who recognise the melodies.
Meanwhile songs such as Africa, Angels and Crazy Little Thing Called Love provide instantly recognisable moments that create smiles across the room.
One of the advantages of piano and cello is the versatility of the instruments. Whether performing a film soundtrack, a classic love song or a contemporary chart hit, the combination creates an elegant and sophisticated sound that remains suitable for conversation whilst still being engaging for guests.
The Newlyweds Arrive
One of the key moments of the afternoon came when Jennifer and Matthew arrived at Bashall Barn following their church ceremony.
The arrival of the newly married couple is often one of the most exciting moments of the day. Guests gather, drinks are raised and everyone wants to celebrate together.
For their entrance, Jennifer and Matthew chose the classic “You’re Just Too Good To Be True.”
It proved to be a fantastic choice.
The instantly recognisable melody created a wonderful sense of occasion as the newlyweds arrived to cheers and applause from family and friends.
These arrival moments are often overlooked when couples are planning their music, but they can be incredibly effective. Having live musicians perform as the couple enter the reception helps create a genuine sense of celebration and ensures the transition from ceremony to reception feels seamless.
Speeches Before the Meal
Jennifer and Matthew chose to hold their speeches before the wedding breakfast.
This is a format that has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Many couples like the idea of getting speeches completed before the meal begins, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the rest of the afternoon without feeling that formalities are still to come.
The speeches provided an opportunity for family and friends to share stories, memories and plenty of laughter before guests sat down for the wedding breakfast.
The atmosphere throughout the room was warm, relaxed and full of genuine affection for the couple.
Wedding Breakfast Music
Once guests had taken their seats, we moved into the next phase of the day.
Wedding breakfast music is slightly different from drinks reception music.
During the meal, the role of live music is often to provide a sophisticated backdrop that enhances the atmosphere without dominating conversations. The music helps fill the room with warmth and energy whilst allowing guests to enjoy their meal and spend time with family and friends.
Jennifer and Matthew had selected a fantastic collection of songs for this part of the day.

This combination worked beautifully.
Some songs, such as All Of Me and Truly Madly Deeply, brought a romantic feel to the afternoon.
Others, including Mr Brightside and Wonderwall, introduced a more upbeat and recognisable energy that guests immediately connected with.
One of the joys of arranging popular songs for piano and cello is discovering how well-known tracks can take on an entirely new character when performed acoustically.
Songs such as Mr Brightside, for example, become surprisingly elegant when translated into a piano and cello arrangement.
Similarly, Clocks works exceptionally well because the repetitive piano patterns naturally suit the instrument, while the cello adds warmth and depth over the top.
The Soundtrack to Conversation
One thing we particularly enjoy about performing during wedding breakfasts is becoming part of the atmosphere without necessarily being the centre of attention.
Guests are talking, laughing and enjoying the meal, yet the music quietly shapes the mood of the room.
Throughout the afternoon we could see guests recognising songs and reacting to familiar melodies. Sometimes it is a smile from a nearby table. Sometimes guests start gently singing along. Occasionally someone will come over afterwards to ask about a particular arrangement.
Those moments remind us how powerful familiar music can be.
A wedding breakfast may not have the dramatic moments of a ceremony, but it is often where some of the most meaningful conversations of the day take place. Live music helps create the environment in which those memories are made.
A Fantastic Couple
Jennifer and Matthew were wonderful to work with throughout the planning process.
Their music choices demonstrated exactly the kind of balance we often encourage couples to consider when planning wedding reception music.
There was a mixture of romantic songs, film music, classic favourites and crowd-pleasing tracks that appealed to guests across multiple generations.
The result was a soundtrack that felt personal whilst still creating broad appeal throughout the room.
Their colour scheme of teal and baby pink complemented the relaxed and elegant feel of the day, while their guest list of over one hundred family members and friends ensured a lively and celebratory atmosphere from start to finish.
Why Live Music Works So Well at Wedding Receptions
Jennifer and Matthew’s wedding was another excellent example of why live music can be such an important part of a wedding reception.
Unlike a playlist, live musicians respond naturally to the atmosphere in the room.
Music can be adapted to suit the mood, timings can be adjusted if required and the performance becomes part of the event itself rather than simply something playing in the background.
Piano and cello also provide a particularly versatile combination.
The sound is elegant enough for formal moments yet contemporary enough to perform modern chart music, film themes and popular classics.
