What Is a Backing Track?
A backing track is a pre-recorded piece of music used to support a live performer.
For example, a singer might sing over an instrumental track. A violinist or saxophonist might play a melody over a pre-recorded accompaniment. In some settings, this can be very effective, and there are performers who use backing tracks extremely well.
But it is not the same as fully live music.
With a backing track, part of the performance is fixed before the event begins. The tempo, structure, length, backing parts and musical shape have already been decided. The performer has to fit around the track, rather than the music fitting naturally around the moment.
At JAM Duo, we work differently.
Our performances are created live, using cello and piano together. That gives us complete musical flexibility, which is especially important at weddings.
Why Fully Live Music Matters at a Wedding
Weddings are not concerts. They are living, moving events.
Timings change. Guests take longer to be seated. A flower girl may walk slowly. The bride may pause before entering. The registrar may take a little longer. Someone may need a moment. The couple may leave the ceremony faster than expected, or linger for a few seconds while everyone applauds.

JAM Duo is made up of two professional musicians.
Jules plays piano. Anne-Marie plays cello. We perform together at weddings throughout the UK, and we take pride in offering a genuine live music experience.
Playing without backing tracks requires musicianship. It requires experience, listening, flexibility and confidence. It means being able to adapt in real time, accompany properly, arrange songs effectively, and understand how music works in the context of a wedding day.
This is not about being unique for the sake of it. We would not claim that we are the only musicians who work in this way.

Why We Prefer a Natural Live Sound
A backing track can sometimes make a small ensemble sound bigger. But bigger is not always better.
For a wedding ceremony, drinks reception or wedding breakfast, couples often want music that feels elegant, personal and atmospheric. They want something which adds to the occasion without taking it over.
A live cello and piano duo gives a beautifully complete sound without needing extra recorded layers.

One of the main reasons we do not use backing tracks is that they remove freedom.
If a track is three minutes long, it is three minutes long. If it has a fixed ending, that ending will happen whether the moment is ready for it or not. If the tempo is too fast for the aisle walk, the performer cannot simply adjust the whole piece around what is happening.
With fully live music, we are not limited in that way.
We can adapt to the pace of the bridal entrance. We can lengthen music during the signing if photographs take a little longer. We can respond to applause. We can change the energy of the drinks reception depending on the atmosphere in the room.
This flexibility is one of the quiet advantages of booking experienced live musicians.
Live Music Feels More Personal
A wedding is personal. The music should feel personal too.
When we play for a couple, we are not simply recreating a track. We are performing their chosen music for their wedding, in that moment, for those guests, in that space.

We have spent years developing our arrangements, our repertoire and our ability to perform live in real wedding settings. We know how to time a ceremony entrance, how to support a drinks reception, how to create atmosphere during a wedding breakfast, and how to move musically through the different parts of the day.

Some couples assume that live music without backing tracks means being limited to classical pieces or traditional wedding music.

JAM Duo can perform a huge range of music live, including modern pop songs, film themes, musical theatre, classical music, jazz standards and more. We have recorded hundreds of pieces on our listen page to give couples inspiration, but this is not a fixed playlist or a restricted repertoire.
Couples can request the music they want.
