Few wedding venues manage to combine luxury, beautiful countryside views, elegant interiors and extensive grounds quite as effortlessly as Rudding Park Hotel near Harrogate. When we arrived to provide music for Jennifer and Philip’s wedding in May, we were reminded exactly why this North Yorkshire venue has earned such a strong reputation amongst couples planning their wedding day.
For this celebration, JAM Duo provided live music throughout the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast, creating a seamless musical backdrop from the moment guests arrived right through until speeches.
Our setup for the day featured our Nord Stage piano housed within our gloss black grand piano shell alongside Anne-Marie’s Yamaha electric cello. The combination looked particularly at home within the elegant surroundings of Rudding Park’s Ballroom and provided the perfect balance of visual impact and beautiful live music.
A Beautiful Spring Wedding at Rudding Park
Located just outside Harrogate, Rudding Park is one of Yorkshire’s most sought-after wedding venues. Set within extensive parkland and gardens, the venue offers couples the best of both worlds: a luxury hotel experience combined with stunning countryside surroundings.
The estate itself covers hundreds of acres, with landscaped gardens, woodland walks, manicured lawns and impressive views across the Yorkshire countryside. The venue has become particularly popular with couples looking for a wedding venue that feels grand and exclusive whilst still maintaining a relaxed atmosphere.
As wedding musicians, we are fortunate to perform at some remarkable venues throughout the UK, but Rudding Park always stands out because of its versatility. The transition from elegant indoor spaces to beautiful outdoor entertaining areas makes it ideal for couples who want different parts of their day to flow naturally between locations.
Jennifer and Philip had planned exactly that.
The ceremony was due to take place in the Ballroom before guests moved outside into the gardens and terrace areas for drinks reception celebrations. Afterwards everyone would return to the Ballroom for the wedding breakfast.
With around 80 guests attending, the venue provided the perfect setting for a stylish yet relaxed spring wedding.
Butterflies Before the Ceremony
One of the advantages of arriving early for weddings is having a little time to explore the venue before guests begin arriving.
As many couples who follow our social media will know, both Anne-Marie and I enjoy spotting wildlife when we’re travelling around the country. Wedding venues often occupy some truly beautiful locations, and we always appreciate having a chance to enjoy them before the day begins.
With everything unloaded and our setup underway, we took a short wander around the grounds at Rudding Park.
The weather was kind, the gardens were looking magnificent and we found ourselves keeping an eye out for butterflies amongst the planting and wildflower areas around the estate.
It is one of those simple pleasures that comes with travelling to so many different venues throughout the UK. One day we might be setting up beside a Scottish loch, the next overlooking the Cornish coastline, and then a few days later walking through the gardens of a luxury Yorkshire hotel searching for butterflies before a wedding ceremony.
Those few quiet moments before guests arrive are often some of our favourite parts of the day.
Soon enough, however, it was time to return to the Ballroom and prepare for the arrival of Jennifer and Philip’s guests.

Guest Arrival Music
For every ceremony, we carefully perform a selection of music before proceedings begin. This serves several purposes.
It creates atmosphere within the room, helps guests settle into their seats and builds anticipation ahead of the bridal entrance.
Jennifer and Philip selected a wonderfully varied collection of pre-ceremony music:
- Friday I’m In Love – The Cure
- One Day Like This – Elbow
- Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles
- Highland Cathedral
- November Rain – Guns N’ Roses
This combination reflected both their personalities and musical tastes perfectly.
One of the things we particularly enjoyed was the variety. Guests heard everything from classic British pop and rock through to Highland Cathedral, which always creates a sense of occasion when performed live on piano and cello.
As the Ballroom gradually filled with family and friends, the atmosphere became increasingly warm and expectant.
A Beautiful Ceremony in the Ballroom
The Ballroom at Rudding Park provides a wonderful setting for wedding ceremonies.
Its elegant proportions allow plenty of natural light whilst still feeling intimate enough for an emotional ceremony. Our position at the rear of the room enabled the music to blend naturally throughout the space without ever overwhelming the proceedings.
The bridal party entrance began with Annie’s Song for the bridesmaids.
This was followed by Jennifer’s entrance to Can’t Help Falling In Love.
Few songs have remained as popular for wedding ceremonies as Elvis Presley’s timeless classic. There is something wonderfully simple and heartfelt about the melody which translates beautifully to piano and cello.
Timing a bridal entrance is always one of the most important responsibilities we have as wedding musicians.
Every wedding ceremony is different.
Some aisles are short, others surprisingly long. Some brides walk quickly whilst others prefer to take their time and enjoy the moment.
Our role is to adapt in real time, ensuring the music feels completely natural throughout the entrance. This means extending sections, repeating passages or adjusting the arrangement live as required.
Jennifer’s entrance worked beautifully and created exactly the atmosphere she had hoped for.
Signing the Register
Following the ceremony itself, we performed three carefully selected pieces during the signing:
- For The Love Of A Princess
- Dreams
- Wherever You Will Go
For The Love Of A Princess from Braveheart is one of those pieces that works exceptionally well on piano and cello. Its sweeping melody and emotional character make it perfectly suited to wedding ceremonies.
Dreams by The Cranberries provided a lovely contrast, introducing a lighter and more uplifting feel.
Meanwhile Wherever You Will Go offered another meaningful and emotional moment before the ceremony concluded.
Together they created a wonderful musical journey that reflected the significance of the occasion whilst maintaining the relaxed atmosphere Jennifer and Philip wanted throughout the day.

A Joyful Exit
Every wedding ceremony deserves an upbeat ending.
Jennifer and Philip chose Stuck With You by Huey Lewis and The News for their exit music.
As soon as the newlyweds made their way back down the aisle as husband and wife, the mood shifted instantly from emotional reflection to celebration.
Guests were smiling, applauding and eager to continue the festivities outside.
The transition worked perfectly and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Drinks Reception in the Gardens
One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly the drinks reception.
With guests moving outside into the gardens and terrace areas, everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Rudding Park whilst catching up with family and friends.
Outdoor drinks receptions are always among our favourite parts of a wedding day.
The atmosphere tends to be relaxed and informal, giving guests the opportunity to mingle whilst enjoying live music in the background.
Jennifer and Philip had chosen a particularly enjoyable drinks reception playlist featuring:
- Say A Little Prayer For You
- Iris
- Sweet Child O’Mine
- A Thousand Years
- Together In Electric Dreams
- Crazy Little Thing Called Love
- L-O-V-E
- Shine
- Songbird
- This Will Be An Everlasting Love
- Blackbird
- Unchained Melody
- Across The Stars
- City Of Lovers
- You Know My Name
- I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing
- Into The West
- Wildest Dreams
- Perfect Day
- Deeply Dippy
- Escape (The Piña Colada Song)
This selection showcased exactly why we encourage couples to choose music that genuinely reflects their own tastes rather than feeling restricted to traditional wedding playlists.
There was everything from classic Queen and Oasis through to James Bond themes, film music, modern pop and even Deeply Dippy.
Performing arrangements like these is one of the reasons we love what we do.
The versatility of piano and electric cello allows us to move seamlessly between genres whilst maintaining a consistent sound that works perfectly within a wedding environment.
Throughout the drinks reception guests were free to explore the gardens, enjoy photographs and spend time together while live music floated across the terrace.

Returning to the Ballroom
Following the drinks reception, guests returned to the Ballroom for the wedding breakfast.
This is often the longest continuous section of music we provide during a wedding day and requires a slightly different approach.
Rather than creating excitement or anticipation, the role of wedding breakfast music is to enhance the atmosphere without dominating conversations.
The aim is to create warmth, elegance and a sense of occasion whilst allowing guests to relax and enjoy their meal.
Jennifer and Philip selected an excellent collection of songs for this part of the day.
Wedding Breakfast Music
Their wedding breakfast playlist included:
- In My Life
- Just The Way You Are
- Love Of My Life
- Tale As Old As Time
- When You Say Nothing At All
- Your Song
- Can You Feel The Love Tonight
- Brown Eyed Girl
- I Will Always Love You
- Jupiter
- Clair de Lune
- Moon River
- Loch Lomond
- A Million Dreams
- Pure Imagination
- Photograph
- She’s The One
- Up Where We Belong
- Every Breath You Take
What stood out immediately was the balance between contemporary songs, classic love songs, film music and traditional repertoire.
The inclusion of pieces such as Jupiter and Clair de Lune added moments of elegance and sophistication, whilst songs such as Brown Eyed Girl, Photograph and She’s The One brought a familiar warmth that guests immediately recognised.
Moon River remains one of our favourite pieces to perform during wedding breakfasts. Its relaxed, timeless quality seems perfectly suited to long lunches and celebrations shared with family and friends.
Meanwhile A Million Dreams and Pure Imagination introduced a touch of cinematic magic that reflected the joyful optimism of the day.
Throughout the meal our grand piano shell provided a particularly striking visual focal point within the Ballroom, giving the impression of a traditional grand piano whilst retaining all the flexibility and reliability of our professional Nord Stage setup.
Combined with Anne-Marie’s Yamaha electric cello, the overall presentation complemented the venue beautifully.
Why Live Music Works So Well Throughout the Day
One of the advantages of booking the same musicians for multiple parts of the wedding day is continuity.
Rather than having separate suppliers for the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast, live music creates a consistent atmosphere throughout.
Guests become familiar with the sound.
The music evolves naturally alongside the day.
The transition from ceremony to drinks reception to wedding breakfast feels seamless.
Jennifer and Philip’s wedding demonstrated this perfectly.
The romantic atmosphere of the ceremony gradually developed into a celebratory drinks reception before settling into the elegant and relaxed backdrop of the wedding breakfast.
Throughout it all, the sound of live piano and cello remained a constant thread connecting every stage of the day.
