Some wedding venues immediately make an impression from the moment you arrive. Kinmount House is undoubtedly one of those places.
Set within extensive private grounds in Dumfries and Galloway, this magnificent Scottish country house combines the grandeur of a stately home with the warmth and exclusivity couples look for in a modern wedding venue. It was the perfect setting for Kathryn and Alex’s wedding, a celebration that blended timeless elegance with a wonderfully personal soundtrack featuring everything from Foo Fighters and Hans Zimmer to Lord of the Rings, Assassin’s Creed and classic love songs.
We were delighted to provide live music for both the ceremony and drinks reception, performing inside the main house using our gloss black piano shell housing the Nord Stage Piano alongside Anne-Marie’s Yamaha electric cello and our Yamaha sound system.
From the arrival of guests accompanied by a traditional Scottish piper through to a lively drinks reception filled with film music, gaming themes and contemporary favourites, this was a wedding full of personality and unforgettable moments.
Kinmount House – One of Scotland’s Most Impressive Exclusive-Use Wedding Venues
Located near Annan in Dumfries and Galloway, Kinmount House is one of Scotland’s most spectacular exclusive-use wedding venues.
Approaching the property is an experience in itself. As the road winds through the estate, the house gradually comes into view, revealing an imposing country mansion surrounded by beautifully maintained grounds.
Unlike many traditional hotels, Kinmount House offers couples the feeling of having an entire Scottish estate to themselves for the duration of their wedding celebrations. This exclusivity creates a relaxed atmosphere where family and friends can fully immerse themselves in the occasion.
Inside, the house combines historic architecture with luxurious contemporary styling. Grand staircases, elegant reception rooms, high ceilings and impressive period features provide endless opportunities for stunning wedding photographs.
For musicians, Kinmount House offers some particularly beautiful performance spaces. The ceremony room within the main house feels both intimate and grand, creating an atmosphere that works exceptionally well for live piano and cello music.
It’s easy to understand why Kinmount House has become such a sought-after wedding venue for couples looking for a luxury Scottish wedding experience.
Preparing for the Ceremony
Kathryn and Alex had invited approximately 82 guests to share their day, creating a lovely atmosphere from the moment people began arriving.
The wedding styling combined classic black tuxedos for the groomsmen with soft light pink dresses for the bridesmaids. The combination worked beautifully within the elegant surroundings of Kinmount House, balancing sophistication with a touch of springtime colour.
For this wedding, we chose to use our gloss black piano shell, which always looks particularly at home in grand country house settings.
Housing our Nord Stage Piano inside the piano shell allows us to achieve the visual impact of a traditional grand piano whilst retaining the flexibility and reliability of our modern performance setup.
Alongside Anne-Marie’s Yamaha electric cello and our Yamaha sound system, the result was a setup that complemented the venue perfectly.
Before guests entered the ceremony room, a traditional Scottish piper welcomed arrivals, creating a wonderful sense of occasion and reminding everyone that they were celebrating a wedding in one of Scotland’s most beautiful locations.
A Unique and Personal Pre-Ceremony Playlist
One of our favourite things about modern weddings is seeing couples move away from convention and choose music that genuinely reflects their personalities.
Kathryn and Alex certainly embraced that approach.
As guests took their seats, we performed an eclectic and highly personal collection of music that included:
- Ezio’s Family from Assassin’s Creed
- The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel
- The Only Exception by Paramore
- Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows
- Turning Page from Twilight
- Clair de Lune by Debussy
What made this selection particularly effective was how naturally these pieces worked together when arranged for piano and cello.
Film music, gaming soundtracks and contemporary songs often translate beautifully into instrumental arrangements because strong melodies sit at the heart of each piece.
Guests who recognised the references often smiled immediately, while others simply enjoyed the music without necessarily knowing its origins.
That is one of the great strengths of instrumental wedding music. Songs can carry enormous personal meaning whilst still working elegantly within a formal setting.
A Dramatic Bridal Entrance
The bridal entrance is always one of the defining moments of a wedding ceremony.
Kathryn made a wonderfully bold and memorable choice by walking down the aisle to Everlong by Foo Fighters.
Whilst most guests associate Everlong with its original rock arrangement, the melody adapts beautifully for piano and cello, creating a version that retains all of the emotional impact whilst feeling entirely appropriate for a wedding ceremony.
As the bridesmaids made their way into the room and anticipation built among the guests, the opening notes immediately captured everyone’s attention.
When Kathryn appeared, there was a palpable sense of excitement throughout the room.
The choice perfectly reflected the couple’s personality whilst creating a genuinely emotional moment.
These are often our favourite wedding entrances because they feel completely unique to the couple rather than following a traditional formula.
Live Music Throughout the Ceremony
We performed from the rear of the ceremony room, providing live music throughout the proceedings and helping to create a seamless flow from beginning to end.
Live music brings a flexibility that recorded tracks simply cannot replicate.
The timing can be adjusted in real time, transitions happen naturally, and every moment feels connected.
This is particularly valuable during ceremonies where no two weddings ever unfold in exactly the same way.
Whether someone pauses slightly longer than expected or the registrar takes a different pace, live musicians can adapt instantly.
Those subtle adjustments often go unnoticed by guests, but they make an enormous difference to the overall atmosphere.
Music for the Signing of the Register
For the signing of the register, Kathryn and Alex continued their cinematic theme with a carefully chosen collection of instrumental pieces.
Their selections included:
- The Shire from The Lord of the Rings
- Cornfield Chase by Hans Zimmer
- Now We Are Free from Gladiator
This was an inspired collection of music.
Each piece carries a distinct emotional character whilst sharing a sense of scale and storytelling that suited the venue perfectly.
The gentle warmth of The Shire created a beautiful contrast to the grandeur of the room, while Cornfield Chase introduced the soaring cinematic style for which Hans Zimmer is renowned.
Now We Are Free provided a particularly moving conclusion to the signing section, filling the room with a sense of celebration and optimism.
For guests who recognised the music, these pieces carried additional meaning. For everyone else, they simply worked as beautifully written instrumental music.
An Exit Nobody Saw Coming
One of the joys of modern weddings is the occasional unexpected musical choice.
Kathryn and Alex certainly delivered one of those moments.
As they were announced as husband and wife, they exited the ceremony to 99 Luftballons by Nena.
The reaction from guests was fantastic.
What initially sounds like an unconventional wedding choice became a wonderfully upbeat and joyful recessional when arranged for piano and cello.
The recognisable melody immediately lifted the mood and sent guests out of the ceremony smiling.
Moments like this remind us that wedding music doesn’t need to follow rules. The best choices are often the ones that mean something to the couple.

Drinks Reception in the Main House
Following the ceremony, guests moved into the drinks reception whilst photographs took place around the house and grounds.
We remained within the main house and continued performing throughout the afternoon.
Kinmount House offers numerous beautiful spaces for drinks receptions, allowing guests to explore the venue whilst enjoying drinks and conversation.
The atmosphere was relaxed and celebratory as family and friends gathered to congratulate the newlyweds.
This part of the day is often where live music really comes into its own.
Guests are moving between rooms, chatting with people they may not have seen for years and enjoying the first opportunity to relax after the ceremony.
The right music helps maintain energy without ever dominating the room.
A Drinks Reception Playlist Full of Personality
Kathryn and Alex’s drinks reception playlist was one of the most varied and enjoyable collections we have performed recently.
Their selections included:
- Jurassic Park
- Follow You
- A Thousand Years
- Africa
- Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
- Hero
- Unwritten
- What I’ve Done
- Ave Maria
- Unchained Melody
- Final Fantasy Theme
- The Force Theme
- Time
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- Pure Imagination
What stood out most was the way these choices reflected different parts of the couple’s lives and interests.
There were classic love songs sitting alongside iconic film themes, video game music, orchestral soundtracks and contemporary rock.
The result felt completely authentic.
One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding music is that every couple should choose the same handful of popular songs.
In reality, the most memorable weddings are often the ones where music reflects the personalities of the people getting married.
Guests quickly pick up on that authenticity.
Why Piano and Cello Work So Well for Film and Gaming Music
Many of the pieces Kathryn and Alex selected originated in films or video games.
These genres are particularly effective when performed by piano and cello.
Composers such as Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore and Joe Hisaishi write music with strong melodies and emotional depth, making their work ideal for live instrumental arrangements.
The cello naturally captures the warmth and richness often associated with orchestral soundtracks, while the piano provides harmonic depth and rhythmic energy.
Together they create a surprisingly cinematic sound despite involving only two musicians.
It’s one of the reasons we increasingly see couples choosing music from films, television series and video games alongside more traditional wedding songs.
A Wonderful Scottish Celebration
Looking back, Kathryn and Alex’s wedding perfectly demonstrated how a couple can create a day that feels elegant, sophisticated and deeply personal at the same time.
The grandeur of Kinmount House provided a stunning backdrop, while their carefully chosen soundtrack ensured every moment reflected who they are as a couple.
From the piper welcoming guests to the cinematic ceremony music and eclectic drinks reception playlist, every part of the day felt thoughtfully considered.
As musicians, these are the weddings we particularly enjoy because they allow us to showcase the versatility of live piano and cello whilst helping couples tell their story through music.
