JAM Duo with Layla and Felipe in Bristol

Today we were playing for a Thanksgiving Service in Bristol as Layla and Felipe were renewing their vows. The service took place at All Saint’s Church, Clifton in Bristol.

All Saint’s Church, Clifton

All Saints Church, Clifton

All Saints Church is situated prominently in Pembroke Road, Clifton and was part of the Bristol Arts Trail for 2021. This meant, when we arrived, the church was buzzing with lots of visitors.

All Saints has always striven to be a beacon of Anglo-Catholic worship and for this reason attracts people to the congregation from within the parish and surrounding neighbourhood but also many from some distance away.

Music for the Service

All Saints has a lovely Broadwood Grand Piano which we had been asked to play. This always gives us a dilemma when it comes to using instruments at venues. With such a lovely piano, it would have looked odd to set up a digital piano next to it! Fortunately the instrument at All Saints was ‘almost’ in tune. At least it was in tune enough to blend nicely with the cello. There were one or two moments where the acoustic definitely helped blend the cello with the piano, but overall it was a lovely sound.

The service started with Layla walking in with her daughter and we played Air on the G String (from Suite Number 3 BWV 1068) by JS Bach. This sounded lovely in the acoustic of All Saints. The service was very traditional and beautifully lead by the priest Father Charles Sutton.

Our second piece of music was during the blessing of the rings where we played Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar by Vinicius de Moraes. The translation of this is I know I will love you. This was a new piece for us but we were very happy to learn it for Layla and Felipe.

At the end of the service the congregation were invited to stay seated and listen to us perform Samba de Varao (Summer Samba) composed by Marcus Valle. This is a great song although not perhaps an obvious choice for the cello. However we came up with our own unique version for the occasion as Layla wanted it particularly upbeat.
