Borthwick Castle, situated just 12 miles southeast of Edinburgh, stands as one of Scotland’s most remarkable and well-preserved medieval fortresses. Constructed in 1430 by Sir William de Borthwick, this imposing double-towered keep boasts 15-foot-thick walls and a commanding presence over the surrounding Midlothian countryside. Throughout its storied history, the castle has been a silent witness to significant events, including providing refuge to Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1567. She famously escaped from the castle disguised as a page boy to evade capture by rebellious nobles.Additionally, in 1650, Oliver Cromwell’s forces attacked Borthwick Castle, leaving visible cannon damage on its eastern wall.

Today, Borthwick Castle has been meticulously restored to serve as an exclusive-use wedding venue, seamlessly blending its rich historical legacy with modern luxury. Couples seeking a romantic and intimate setting will find the castle’s authentic medieval architecture, grand halls, and spiral staircases to be the perfect backdrop for their special day. The venue offers a variety of spaces for ceremonies and receptions, including the magnificent Great Hall, the Garrison, and the State Room, all licensed for religious, humanist, and civil ceremonies.

Accommodations at Borthwick Castle include 12 uniquely designed bedchambers within the castle itself, as well as additional lodging in the Crookston Cottage and the luxurious Gatehouse, providing overnight stays for up to 28 guests . The castle’s dedicated team works closely with each couple to create a bespoke wedding experience, ensuring that every detail reflects their personal vision. From pre-wedding gatherings on the castle grounds to sumptuous feasts prepared by award-winning chefs, Borthwick Castle offers an unparalleled setting for a truly unforgettable wedding celebration.

For those dreaming of a fairy-tale wedding steeped in history and elegance, Borthwick Castle provides an enchanting venue where love stories are woven into the very fabric of its ancient walls.

Ceremony and Drinks

Having driven up to Scotland the night before we had plenty of time in the morning as the ceremony wasn’t until mid afternoon. This gave us an opportunity to explore nearby Dalkeith Palace which in itself is also a rather splendid backdrop for a wedding. We had a spot of breakfast and enjoyed a walk around the grounds before making our way to Borthwick Castle.

There we were greeted with a spiral staircase of no fewer than 74 steps, up which we had to carry nearly 100kg of gear! But no matter, we had been warned of this and also the venue were extremely kind and helped us carry things!

After the ceremony we relocated back down the spiral staircase – again with help from Callum who was very kind carrying the keyboard and heavier speakers for us. This meant we were able to be ready and set up to play before the bride and groom got to the drinks reception. This in turn maximised the amount of music we were able to offer them.

Our setlist for the outdoor drinks reception included at the request of the couple:

Disney- Brave, Pocahontas, Live action Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Frozen 2, Star Wars, Princess and the Frog, Anastasia, Hocus Pocus
Harry Potter
For a Moment-Wonka
Bridgerton
Mama Mia
As well as a selection of covers of Popular Titles

We really enjoyed being a part of this delightful Scottish wedding and it was our pleasure to provide music for Courtney and Cameron. We wish them every happiness as they embark on their married future together.
