Outdoor weddings can be absolutely beautiful. A ceremony in a garden, drinks on a terrace, music drifting across a lawn, guests enjoying the sunshine — when the weather behaves, there are few better settings for live wedding music.
As JAM Duo, we are very used to playing outside. Over the years we have performed for outdoor ceremonies, drinks receptions and wedding breakfasts in gardens, courtyards, terraces, barns, private estates, country houses and even venues with wide open views across the sea.
But in the UK, when the weather turns hot, it can sometimes feel as though the whole country goes into mild panic. Schools close, trains slow down, people debate whether 28 degrees counts as “extreme”, and everyone suddenly remembers that shade is quite useful.
For us, the position is simple.
We will happily play outside in hot weather, including during a heatwave, provided it is safe and practical to do so. We will turn up, we will bring the music, and we will do everything we reasonably can to make the day work beautifully.
However, in very hot conditions, we do reserve the right to use our own canopy to protect ourselves and our instruments from direct sunlight.
Why Shade Matters for Outdoor Wedding Musicians
Playing live music outside is very different from simply standing outside as a guest with a glass of something cold.
As musicians, we are often in position for a long period before guests arrive. We may need to set up, sound check, remain ready for the ceremony, play throughout the ceremony itself, and then continue into the drinks reception.
In hot weather, direct sun can quickly become a serious issue. It affects concentration, comfort, visibility, tuning, equipment, and the instruments themselves.
For JAM Duo, our outdoor setup usually includes:
- Nord stage piano
- Yamaha electric cello
- Yamaha sound system
- Amplification and cabling
- Music stands and iPads
- Power supply where required
- Sometimes our gloss black piano shell
This is professional equipment, and like most musical and electronic equipment, it does not benefit from being baked in direct sun for hours.
A little bit of shade makes a huge difference. It protects the instruments, helps keep the electronics stable, and allows us to perform properly for the couple and their guests.

We Are Happy to Play Outside — But We Need to Be Sensible
We love outdoor weddings. Some of our most memorable performances have been outside, from Cotswold barns and country house gardens to coastal venues and private estates.
In normal summer weather, we are very happy to play outdoors where the venue has arranged a suitable space.
During a heatwave, though, we may need to make sensible adjustments.
That might mean placing us under a tree, using a venue parasol, setting up in the shade of a building, or allowing us to use our own canopy. This is not about being difficult. It is about making sure the music can happen properly and safely.
If we are asked to play in full, direct sun with no shade at all, especially for a long ceremony followed by drinks, that can become impractical very quickly.
Our aim is always the same: to provide beautiful live music without drama.
Our Canopy Policy for Hot Weather
For outdoor weddings in very hot conditions, JAM Duo reserve the right to erect our canopy if we feel it is necessary.
This is purely practical. It gives us shade, protects our instruments and equipment, and allows us to continue performing at the standard couples expect from us.
The canopy is not there to dominate the setting. We are always mindful of photographs, sight lines and the overall look of the ceremony or drinks reception. Wherever possible, we position ourselves discreetly and work with the venue or wedding coordinator to find the best place.
Most couples would much rather have live music performed comfortably and professionally than have musicians struggling in direct sun simply for the sake of appearances.
Heatwaves, Wedding Ceremonies and Timing
The ceremony is often the part of the day where outdoor music matters most.
We usually play as guests arrive, for the entrance of the bridal party, during the signing of the schedule, and for the couple’s exit. These moments require calm timing and concentration.
Heat can affect everyone at an outdoor ceremony — not just musicians. Guests may be looking for shade, the registrar or celebrant may want to keep things moving, and the couple themselves may be standing in the sun for longer than expected.
Live musicians need to be ready for all of this. We are used to adjusting in real time, extending music if the ceremony is delayed, moving smoothly from one piece to another, and making sure the atmosphere remains elegant and relaxed.
That is much easier to do when we are protected from direct heat and glare.
Drinks Receptions in the Sun
Outdoor drinks receptions are often more flexible than ceremonies. Guests can move around, seek shade, and come and go from the music as they wish.
For musicians, though, the playing position still matters.
If we are performing for an hour or more during the drinks reception, we need a sensible location. Ideally this is close enough for guests to enjoy the music, but not so exposed that the instruments and equipment are sitting in the hottest part of the garden or terrace.
A shaded corner, covered terrace, large parasol, tree canopy or our own canopy can all work well.
The music should feel effortless. The practical arrangements behind it simply need to be thought through.
What Couples Can Do to Help
If you are planning an outdoor wedding in the summer, it is worth asking your venue where musicians are usually positioned.
A few helpful questions include:
- Is there natural shade for the ceremony musicians?
- Is there a parasol or covered area available?
- Can musicians set up near a wall, tree, terrace or building for shade?
- Is the performance area on grass, gravel, stone or decking?
- Is power available nearby if needed?
- Is there a wet weather or extreme heat backup plan?
These are not complicated things, but they make a big difference on the day.
The best venues are usually very used to this. They understand that suppliers need practical working conditions, whether that is shade for musicians, water for florists, access for photographers, or a sensible setup area for registrars.
Reliability Matters
One of the reasons couples book JAM Duo is because we are reliable. We travel all over the UK for weddings and we take that responsibility seriously.
Hot weather does not mean we disappear. We do not cancel simply because the forecast looks warm. We do not panic because it is a sunny day in July.
We will be there, ready to play.
At the same time, we are professional musicians using professional equipment, and it is entirely reasonable for us to take sensible precautions when the weather is unusually hot.
A canopy, parasol or shaded performance area is not a luxury. In some conditions, it is what allows us to do the job properly.
Outdoor Wedding Music Without the Stress
The best outdoor weddings feel relaxed, elegant and natural. Guests arrive, the music begins, the ceremony flows, and everything feels beautifully in place.
For that to happen, the practical details matter.
At JAM Duo, we are very happy to play outside for ceremonies, drinks receptions and wedding breakfasts. We have our own equipment, we are experienced in outdoor setups, and we always work carefully with venues and couples to make sure everything runs smoothly.
In hot weather, all we ask is that shade is treated as part of the setup. Whether that comes from the venue, a garden umbrella, a covered terrace or our own canopy, it helps protect the music, the instruments and the performance.
So yes, we will play outside in a heatwave.
We will turn up, set up, and provide beautiful live music for your wedding day.
We may just do it from beneath a very sensible canopy.
