There are some wedding venues that carry an atmosphere the moment you arrive — places where history, romance, and anticipation seem to sit quietly in the walls. Gretna Green is unquestionably one of them.

In February 2026, JAM Duo had the genuine privilege of providing live cello and piano music for Rebecca and Grant’s intimate and beautifully personal wedding ceremony at the Coach House, followed by the wedding breakfast at Gretna Hall Hotel. It was a day that perfectly combined efficiency, warmth, and that unmistakable Gretna Green magic.

We are always grateful to be trusted with such important moments, and this was a wedding we will remember for a long time — not least because of the impressive logistical sprint that started the day.

An Iconic Wedding Setting

Gretna Green needs little introduction. For generations, couples have travelled here to marry, drawn by its romantic reputation and its place in British wedding history. There is something wonderfully symbolic about performing live music at a venue that has witnessed so many love stories begin.

The Coach House provides a particularly charming ceremony space. Elegant but intimate, it lends itself beautifully to live acoustic music — the kind of setting where cello and piano can truly breathe without overwhelming the room.

Rebecca and Grant’s wedding had a lovely sense of calm anticipation from the moment we arrived. With just 16 guests, the atmosphere was personal and focused — exactly the kind of setting where live music can make an especially meaningful impact.

A Very Tight Turnaround

One of the defining features of this wedding — and something couples often don’t see behind the scenes — was the extremely short setup window.

For the 1:30pm ceremony, we were given just 15 minutes to be fully set up and ready to begin playing.

In many venues, musicians are allowed a much longer access period. But at busy, high-turnover wedding locations like Gretna Green, timelines can be tight and precision matters. This is exactly where experience and professionalism become critical.

Thanks to excellent coordination on the day — and some very welcome help from Grant’s groomsmen — we were fully set up in just five minutes.

Yes… five minutes.

Cases opened, instruments assembled, sound system in place, levels checked — and ready.

It was a perfect example of how teamwork (and a lot of wedding experience) keeps the day running smoothly.

Nearly Ten Minutes of Live Pre-Ceremony Music

Because we were ready so quickly, we were able to provide nearly ten minutes of live pre-ceremony jazz before the bridal entrance.

This might sound like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference to the guest experience.

As guests arrived and settled into the Coach House, our gentle jazz set created an immediate sense of occasion — warm, relaxed, and quietly sophisticated. Live music at this stage helps:

  • Ease guests into the ceremony space
  • Cover natural pre-ceremony movement and conversation
  • Build anticipation for the entrance
  • Establish the emotional tone of the ceremony

In an intimate wedding like Rebecca and Grant’s, this atmosphere becomes even more noticeable. Every musical moment feels closer, more personal.

A Thoughtfully Planned Bridal Entrance

Rebecca and Grant had clearly thought carefully about their ceremony music, and we loved the musical structure they requested for the entrance.

Bridal Entrance: You’ve Got a Friend in Me — Randy Newman

Their idea was beautifully musical:

  • Bridesmaids to enter over soft, muted pizzicato cello root notes
  • Piano riff to begin as they reached their position
  • Main verse to bloom naturally as Rebecca made her entrance

This is exactly the kind of bespoke musical shaping that JAM Duo specialises in.

The result felt seamless and cinematic. The gentle plucked cello created forward motion without overwhelming the moment, while the piano gradually introduced the recognisable theme. By the time Rebecca appeared, the music had fully opened out into the main melody.

It was warm, joyful, and perfectly suited to the intimate setting.

Signing Music with a Jazz Feel

For the signing of the register, Rebecca and Grant opted for a selection of jazz-style tunes.

This worked beautifully in the Coach House acoustic. Jazz standards during the signing often strike just the right balance — elegant but unobtrusive, giving guests something lovely to listen to while the formalities take place.

With a smaller guest list, moments like the signing feel especially close and personal, and the live cello and piano helped maintain the gentle flow of the ceremony.

A High-Energy Couple Exit

If the ceremony began with warmth and charm, it ended with real energy.

Couple Exit: More Than a Feeling — Boston

This is a fantastic exit choice and always works brilliantly when arranged for cello and piano. The recognisable opening builds excitement immediately, and the driving rhythm gives the recessional real momentum.

As Rebecca and Grant walked back down the aisle together, the atmosphere lifted instantly — smiles all round, and a wonderful sense of celebration as the ceremony concluded.

Moving to Gretna Hall Hotel

Following the ceremony in the Coach House, celebrations continued at Gretna Hall Hotel for the wedding breakfast and speeches.

Access on the day was straightforward, with free on-site parking and easy access between the Coach House and The Hotel — always appreciated when working with delicate instruments and sound equipment – we are particularly grateful to a couple of members of Grant’s family who helped us carry kit!

We repositioned in the Drawing Room, carefully selecting the best setup location to maximise both space and sound coverage. The room was intimate but perfectly workable, and our compact professional setup meant we could provide full live music without overwhelming the space.

A Brilliantly Varied Wedding Breakfast Playlist

Rebecca and Grant gave us one of the most wide-ranging and fun playlists we’ve had in a while — exactly the sort of brief we love.

Their selections moved effortlessly across genres, including:

  • Blink-182 – All the Small Things
  • JVKE – Golden Hour
  • Clean Bandit – Symphony
  • Miley Cyrus – Flowers
  • Toto – Africa
  • Harry Styles – As It Was
  • Billie Eilish – Bad Guy
  • Taylor Swift – ME!
  • Yan Tiersen – Comptine d’un autre été
  • Luis Fonsi – Despacito
  • Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere
  • Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’
  • A-ha – Take On Me
  • Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive
  • Hans Zimmer – Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Johann Strauss – Blue Danube Waltz
    …and many more.

This kind of varied list is exactly where live musicians can add real value. Rather than feeling like a playlist jumping abruptly between styles, our bespoke cello and piano arrangements create a consistent, elegant musical thread across the entire afternoon.

Whether it’s pop, film music, jazz, or classical, everything feels unified — and distinctly live. You can hear us play by visiting our listen page.

The Joy of an Intimate Wedding

With around 16 guests, Rebecca and Grant’s wedding had a beautifully close-knit feel.

Smaller weddings often allow the music to be appreciated in a slightly different way. Guests are nearer. The acoustic detail carries more clearly. The atmosphere feels more shared.

For us as performers, these weddings are always especially rewarding — there is a real sense of connection in the room, and every musical moment lands with clarity and warmth.

Thank You Rebecca & Grant

Rebecca and Grant — thank you so much for choosing JAM Duo to be part of your wedding day at Gretna Green. It was an absolute pleasure to perform for you both in such a meaningful and historic setting.

A special thank you as well to Grant for kindly arranging food for us on the day — very much appreciated during a busy schedule!

We would also like to thank the team at Gretna Hall Hotel for their support and smooth coordination throughout.

Gretna Green remains one of the UK’s most iconic wedding destinations, and we would love to return to the Coach House again very soon.
