The Power of Music on Your Wedding Day
When you picture your wedding day, you might imagine the flowers, the dress, or the moment you walk down the aisle — but have you ever thought about the soundtrack that will carry those memories for years to come?
We’re Jules and Anne-Marie, the musicians behind JAM Duo – a professional piano and cello duo specialising in live wedding music across the UK. Between us, we’ve played for hundreds of couples in stunning venues from the Scottish Highlands to the Cornish coast. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that music has the extraordinary power to transform a wedding day.
Music shapes emotion. It sets the tempo of a ceremony, the rhythm of a reception, and the ambience of a meal. When performed live, it connects people in the moment in a way that recorded tracks never can. Each note breathes with the atmosphere of the room, reacting to the laughter, tears, and joy that make every wedding unique.
Today, we wanted to share a little about how we craft music for each part of a wedding day — and how, with the right soundtrack, your celebration can become truly unforgettable.
The Wedding Ceremony – Setting the Scene for Forever
The ceremony is where your story as a married couple officially begins, and the music here needs to reflect that sense of beauty, anticipation, and love.
As guests arrive and take their seats, we begin to play — gentle, melodic pieces that ease everyone into the moment. Many couples choose a blend of romantic instrumentals such as Can’t Help Falling in Love, A Thousand Years, or something personal like a song from their first holiday together.
When the moment arrives for the bridal entrance, timing is everything. One of the great advantages of live music is our ability to adjust instantly to your pace. Whether you take your time walking down the aisle or step forward with confidence, we can subtly stretch or shorten phrases so that your entrance feels perfectly natural.
We’ve performed everything from traditional pieces like Canon in D and Salut d’Amour, to modern favourites such as Lover by Taylor Swift or A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay. Sometimes, couples ask for a bespoke blend — for example, combining A Thousand Years with How Long Will I Love You to create a seamless, emotional flow.
During the signing of the register, the music softens again, creating a calm backdrop for photographs and quiet moments. Then, for the couple’s exit, we love something joyful and triumphant — perhaps Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Paradise, or Everlasting Love.
Each ceremony is unique, and the music should reflect that. We take great care in helping our couples select songs that tell their story, whether that means a Disney medley, a film score, or a timeless classical theme.

The Drinks Reception – A Celebration in Full Swing
Once the ceremony ends, the energy lifts — it’s time for celebration! The drinks reception is often where guests relax, mingle, and start the real fun of the day, and the music should reflect that shift in mood.
JAM Duo seamlessly transition from the ceremony space to your reception area. Sometimes this might mean setting up in a courtyard, on a lawn, or on a rooftop terrace. We’re completely mobile and can perform anywhere — indoors or outdoors — using our own power packs when needed.
Our set for the drinks reception usually includes a handpicked mix of popular tunes — everything from Coldplay and Harry Styles to Bridgerton themes and acoustic takes on upbeat chart hits. It’s live, relaxed, and always perfectly balanced so guests can talk without shouting over the music.
We love this part of the day because it gives us the chance to be a little playful with the repertoire. You’ll often find us blending unexpected songs together — perhaps a hint of Chandelier flowing into Dance Monkey, or Electric Dreamsfollowed by Halo.
What makes live music so special here is that it adapts. If guests are chatting quietly, we can keep things mellow; if everyone’s laughing and taking photos, we can pick up the tempo and create a light, festive vibe. Recorded playlists can’t respond like that — but a live duo can read the moment and match it perfectly.
Many of our couples tell us afterwards that this was the moment they realised how much live music elevated their day. Guests linger longer, conversations flow, and the whole atmosphere feels warm, elegant, and joyful.

The Wedding Breakfast – Elegant, Seamless, and Timeless
After the excitement of the reception, guests move into the dining space — often the grandest room of the day — and this is where music subtly changes again.
For the wedding breakfast, our focus is on atmosphere. We create a refined and relaxed mood, giving the meal a sense of occasion without overpowering conversation. Imagine the soft sound of cello and piano as champagne glasses clink and laughter fills the room — that’s the kind of effortless ambience we aim for.
Our repertoire during the meal often includes cinematic pieces, love themes, or instrumental arrangements of well-known songs. From Bridgerton’s orchestral pop covers to timeless classics like Your Song, Everglow, or The Way You Look Tonight, we keep the tone warm and sophisticated.
Sometimes couples ask us to play special tracks that link back to moments earlier in the day — a reprise of their entrance song or a nod to their first dance choice later that evening. We love weaving these motifs throughout the day’s soundtrack so the music feels continuous and personal.
Because we perform live, the timing is fluid. If speeches start earlier or the schedule shifts (as weddings often do!), we can fade gently or pick up again without anyone noticing. It’s this flexibility that allows the whole day to flow seamlessly.

Why Live Music Matters – The JAM Duo Experience
In an age of playlists and streaming, why choose live musicians at all?
For us, the answer is simple: authenticity and emotion.
Live performance has an intimacy that no speaker system can replicate. When Anne-Marie draws her bow across the cello, or when the first piano notes fill the room, people stop and listen. It’s immediate, personal, and real.
We perform every note live – no loops, no backing tracks, no digital tricks. What your guests hear is exactly what’s being created in that moment.
We also believe presentation matters. Our setup includes a Nord Stage piano housed in a black gloss shell, giving the appearance of a grand piano without the logistics. It looks stunning in photographs and adds an elegant visual focal point to your ceremony or reception. Anne-Marie’s Yamaha electric cello complements the sound perfectly, allowing us to perform both indoors and outdoors without compromising tone.
Couples often tell us afterwards that their guests were amazed at how two instruments could create such a full, rich sound. We take pride in that. For us, every performance is about creating an atmosphere — not just background music, but a meaningful experience that enhances the day in every way.
