Today we were privileged to be part of the Geographical Association Annual Awards Ceremony at the University of Manchester. For us this was also rather convenient as it fitted in nicely with some weddings we had recently been part of in Northumberland and Scotland. Manchester was therefore a great location for us as it was on our way back to The Cotswolds.

The GA Annual Conference and Exhibition 2024 took place from 4–6 April 2024 at the University of Manchester.

The Geographical Association (GA) is the leading subject association for teachers of geography. As a registered charity our mission is to ‘further geographical knowledge and understanding through education’.

The Association is a lively community of professional practice with over a century of innovation behind it and an unrivalled understanding of geography teaching.

University Place houses the largest dedicated lecture theatre in the Greater Manchester region. It is an ideal venue for large national and international conferences and high profile events, and boasts a large number of flexible, flat floored rooms for discussion groups.

This year the Geographical Association had opted for a new format for their annual awards for geography educators. JAM Duo providing music before and during the awards ceremony was a key part of this new initiative.

We were asked to play uplifting contemporary music and one of the songs we chose to perform was Muse ‘Starlight’. After the event one of the delegates came over and said he enjoyed the Muse in particular. Apparently when he heard it he was like wow thats good and then realised it was also a live performance! (We were off to one side so not in direct line of sight for the delegates).

Our Bose Speaker system with subwoofer sounded particularly good in the 600 seat lecture theatre!

The 2024 Conference opened at 12.00 on Thursday 4 April with an afternoon of events and opportunities to network, beginning with a welcome from our President Denise Freeman.

Day one of conference included a range of field visits, networking events and the Conference Dinner, as well as the annual GA awards ceremony, Public Lecture and drinks reception.

Days two and three featured the usual diverse range of lectures, workshops, Teacher-to-Teacher and research paper sessions, finishing at 16.00 on Saturday 6 April.
